HANDBUILDING WILD, AQUATIC CREATURES

For adventurous hand-builders who want to go beyond traditional pinch, coil and slab techniques, this is a happy, fun workshop presented by a master at the crest of his craft. Create your own aquatic creatures using two of Vipoo’s great techniques - hand-building and press-moulding with paperclay. Taking his inspiration from marine life and animals, Vipoo will demonstrate how to design and make fish fins and how to create delicate patterns using simple, basic tools.

Vipoo Srivalasa's Biography

Now living in Australia, Vipoo Srivilasa, a Thai ceramic artist, creates elaborate ceramic constructions inspired by the unique variety of Australian aquatic creatures. Vipoo’s most recent work is based on traditional Thai blue and white domestic ware and explores his concerns about the modern world’s complex mixture of materialism, cross cultural mingling, Buddhist philosophy and disposable culture.

He also knew for his mythical monster teapots which were inspired by his memories of the Hobart waterfront and his experiences snorkelling in Tasmania, Queensland. Vipoo combine the shapes, colours and textures of Australian marine life with elements of his Thai cultural heritage to create the bizarre creatures.

Vipoo’s work also draws on traditional Thai costumes together with the flamboyant costumes worn in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parades. The juxtaposition of these two distinct cultural elements is inspired by his belief that different cultures do not have to come together in fear and loathing, but can complement each other through the power of art and imagination. If you have never been to the studio here is your chance.

Do you want to learn how to use the alarm, the kiln, the slab roller and do you want to know your way around the studio?

Do you want to watch a throwing demonstration, with some special "troubleshooting" requests?

Would you like to meet other members, perhaps with a view to organising going to the studio on a regular/irregular basis together or just talk to other ceramicists?

Any or all of the above.?

The recent survey indicated that there are many of you who would say yes to at least one of those things. This is your opportunity. SUNDAY 2 December, 11am-3pm in the Studio ( G Block Cosgrove).

The programme is roughly as follows, so that if you want you can just come for the kiln demo and lunch, or the whole day, or just the throwing, meet others and look in the library and lunch, or just lunch and the afternoon, what ever suits you.

  • 11am: How to get into the studio, do the alarm, (practice), a general look about. (John Watson).

Renowned ceramicist Dawn Oakford will run a two-day mould making workshop in November.

Dawn’s angular and asymmetrical work is highly sought by collectors

The workshop is ideal for those with little or no prior experience in mould-making and slipcasting, but is also recommended to those wishing to develop, refine and add to their existing moulds.

While giving particular emphasis to strong, facetted/textured forms, Dawn will cover the production of models (3D patterns or prototypes), simple "drop" moulds, moulds of natural objects and mould components for the creation of functional and sculptural objects.
