I'm shocked. It seems human beings are always discovering another cruelty to torture animals. I do hope this petition can help. I lost a pet rabbit to Myxi when I was a child. It was a horrible way for it to die. I have rabbits now that are vaccinated. Pet rabbits are not pests. Let them have the vaccine.

I used to live in an area of the Uk whose wild rabbit population was particularly affected by myxy, the fact that our pet rabbits were vaccinated against myxy had absolutely no affect on the occurence of myxy in the wild local population. It is a Complete and Total Nonsense that vaccinating Pet rabbits would have Any affect on the wild population! It is a terrible disease to witness. Horrific and heartbreaking. It is also a Disgraceful and completely Inhumane way to cull the wild population!! I am disgusted and appalled. Your advisors should be sacked for gross incompetence and wasting the taxpayers money.

I can't even begin to put into words how outraged I am over this deliberate attack on LIVING creatures. Hasn't anybody given any thought that this virus isn't bound by national boundaries and very possibly COULD BE spread to other nations?! There are plenty of caring, compassionate human beings in this world who happen to adore rabbits as pets (me being one of them) and I agree with the person who made the comment that if the wild rabbit population is in need to being controlled then there has GOT TO BE a better way of doing so. Give me more petitions to sign; I'll sign them!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Pookey & Benny's Mom

It is a very distressing thing when you are a child and your pet rabbit becomes seriously ill. You take it to a vet and they can do nothing to save it all because some high n heartless group of scientists (and some so called conservation department peoples) have decided to release a virus to indiscriminantly kill all rabbits - including my little Thumper! - and did not allow a vaccine to protect my little Thumper! He was a cute bunny, like all bunnies. You could cuddle him, wash him, groom him, he sat with the cat, he romped in the back yard with my puppy (He was actually older than my puppy and actually used to puppy mind for me! Yes, where he was Brown-Ears my pointer x greyhound (of all breeds to play with a rabbit) was. As always, when Thumper went I had my beloved puppy! Why was I not happy though? I loved Brownie and still do - God now rest his soul - but I also loved Thumper! Infact Brownie and I both did. Unlike Brownie who thankfully could be vaccinated against deadly dog viruses, Thumper could not be protected from myxomatosis. Why not! NO VACCINE My parents did not lie to me - I knew Thumper went to Heaven anyway - My parents told me just what sent him there and why it could not be cured or prevented. Well, one of many good things which came out of knowing Thumper (age 3 years and could have lived longer!) was that how he died allowed me to help with my 5 year old cousin when her bunny died. What would have helped more would have been some forward thinking to allow for a vaccine to be avaliable for pet rabbits! In later years I had whatched my cousins little girl cry over her bunny who died of myxomatosis. She lived up the country, and though her father shot bunnies and found the virus helped 'to some degree for some time', he was rather pissed-off that there was no protection for that little tan and white cat-like in nature (oh it was house trained) rabbit his daughter loved so much. Ok - they sould have known how the virus worked in rural areas - they did! Yes! stop the mosquitoes! - heck, no one has been able to totally prevent mozzies from getting to bunny hutches. Sure - it is easey in a bloody laboratory where nothing really lives long enough anyway, and would hardly need a mozzie to infect it with some horrid virus! Oh, that RHD/RCV escaped did it not! - Or the news programs have it in for the CSIRO spreading nasty rumers. Anyway... Slow, painful, stressful deaths for childrens pets which could have been avoided if a vaccine was made avalible to protect pets against the virus! What sort of bloody mad people release a killer virus without providing protection against it for those animals which are not the specific targets. Pet bunnies rather than wild bunnies. (personally I do not agree to the virus for any rabbit, however are very angry that no vaccine was provided for pet rabbits which are pets and not considered 'vermin'at all) It is about time vaccines were avalible to protect pet rabbits. Now wouldn't that be a nice thing to do for the New Year!

MY opinion is that there is no danger in letting owners of domesticated rabbits (this includes pet owners and rabbit farmers) have access to Myxomatosis Vaccine. Scientific data from EU conuntries lends credibility to this argument. We do have a great deal of respect for the rabbit problems you face; however, in the face of scientific data, we believe that you should allow the domestic rabbit owners the privelege of keeping their animals safe and free of disease. It is absolutely deplorable to be intentionally spreading this horrific virus in the first place. There are many alternatives to controlling an out-of-control popultaion without resorting to these measures. But to go further and specifically disallow this vaccine to the domestic rabbits who accidentially become infected with this disease is unconscionable. As human beings who have been given stewardship of this planet and the creatures upon it, decisions like this one show just how far the human race still has to go in its own evolution before it can be considered an evolved species. Remember, just because something can be done, does not necessarily mean it should be done.

Please authorise a vaccine to help protect Australian pet rabbits from Myxomatosis. They should not be made to suffer - they are living entities with a spirit and have feelings, too. Rabbits make excellent childrens' pets and to allow them to cease existence, after all we, us humans, co-exist with animals and nature as part of a whole of this Mother Earth. Give them a fair go and authorise the vaccination for prevention against Myxomatsis. We are a dying planet, and your negligence is not helping much in the survival of the animal kingdom. Mankind should be focusing on positive thoughts, taking positive action, such as approval and authorisation of a vaccine for myxomatsis, thus enabling the animal kingdom to survive and surpass into positive energy to assist Mother Earth in Healing.

Not only do I favor protecting pet rabbits, but also the wild rabbits against whom these lethal viruses are aimed. It is only by human meddling into the natural order of things that the balance of nature is upset in the first place. Continuing that interference only worsens the problem in time, and creates additional problems to contend with. What will it take for governments around the world to learn this lesson!?

I feel that since the government is intentionally spreading this disease among wild rabbits, they should be obliged to provide vaccinations for domestic rabbits which are inadvertantly being infected. The disease is transmitted by biting insects, and so is indiscriminate of whether its victim is a pet or a destructive feral rabbit. A vaccine should be made readily available for those who wish to protect their pet rabbits from this painful and fatal disease.

To release this virus is to commit a crime against all wildlife as well as all who inhabit the earth. Please reconsider your decision before its too late!

I am signing this petition to help educate Australian authorities of the large number of people around the world with companion rabbits. I dare say that if this situation were affecting domestic cats and dogs instead of rabbits, there would be NO resistance by the authorities to providing pet owners the means to inoculate their beloved pets from this threat. Ironically, we here in New York are currently under seige from mosquitoes carrying a virus that originated halfway around the world. It has killed several people already. Don't let Myomatosis get out of control via mosquitoes. Keep it under control by allowing the vaccine.

I'd like to add that the efford Australian government makes to protect the wild life itself is a good thing.

Pet rabbits are an important part of my life, and I have total empathy for Australian pet rabbit owners who must fear their animals will contract a deadly virus. I virtually could not live without rabbits, they are so dear to me. I do hope this petition is successful.

All pets should be vaccinated against any type of disease. Wild animals are different.

Although I understand your worry concerning the vaccine being transferred to wild rabbits, I think you should at least let pet rabbits that are of high risk at getting this virus i.e. rabbits that live in rural areas by farm land, have access to this vaccine. Thanks for reading....

First, humans release rabbits in an area to which they aren't native, and by doing so, PEOPLE disrupted the environment. Then people tried to "fix" the "problem" by infecting the rabbits with a cruel, heartless disease. Now the disease is not only killing the wild rabbits, but going after the domestic population as well. Though this can be prevented with a vaccine, "authorities" yet once again interfere with their usual cruelty and thoughtlessness. It's bad enough to try to destroy an entire species without compounding such horrendous *goals* by exterminating pets as well. Here's a thought. Try practicing some of the much-vaunted "humanity" we humans are supposedly known for. Allow vaccination.

If the true data shows that using the vaccine on pet rabbits does not stop the virus from killing wild ones, then it is ludicris that it is not available to pet owners. I am aware that British rabbits are vaccinated and it has not stopped the virus in the UK. Total support then, that the vaccine should be made available in Australia.

1. In the Netherlands, long before the vaccination of tame rabbits, there were already wild rabbits resistant against myxomatosis. 2. Did myxomatosis have succes in the fight against the rabbits? Will VHD? I doubt it. 3. Wild rabbits have more 'natural' resistance than tame rabbits. Therefore tame rabbits, kept as pets, should be protected against life-threatening diseases like myxo and VHD. It's part of civilisation to protect your pets against life-threatening diseases like RHD and myxo. There is no real irrevocable risc of spreading immunity to wild rabbits, so vaccination should be allowed.

I think it is terrible that rabbitpets in Australie cannot be vaccinated, authorities have strange thoughts about this! I have seen rabbitpets die of VHD, took them five days of terrible suffering. I want this to be stopped!

This is the most horrible disease that I have ever seen. Should it ever cross the borders of Australia and destroy life in the rest of the world, the effects would be devastating. I would like to see this disease wiped out completely. Our domestic rabbits and wildlife don't deserve this horrible fate.
