Scroll down this page to read a letter from an NRA investigator confirming the illegal spread of RCD in Australia and the non-prosecution for this offence.
Perhaps the people who spread the RCD on baits in NSW mixed 1080 with the RCD/VHD virus.
Some NZ authorities were also suspicious that RCD/VHD and 1080 were mixed together illegally and applied to baits.
In New Zealand RCD/VHD baits were spread across parts of New Zealand soon after New Zealand authorities said NO to RCD/VHD as a biocontrol of wild rabbits.
It is illegal to spread RCD/VHD on baits in Australia and RCD baits have not been legalised in Australia by the NRA.
It is an offence to spread RCD/VHD virus on baits and there are fines for doing so.
There is evidence that RCD/VHD has caused illness in non-rabbit species and therefore the disease should not EVER be legalised for spread on food baits. (Read through the Rabbit Information Website for more information on the impact of RCD/VHD on humans and non-rabbit species).
The lack of prosecution in Australia of those who aided the original spread of RCD when the virus escaped from Wardang Island is unacceptable.
The circulation of propoganda by Australian authorities suggesting that the RCD/VHD is safe to spread as a biocontrol has obviously led some people to believe that they can spread this deadly heamorrhagic virus of mammals across Australia as they wish.
There are no safe vaccines to protect any non-rabbit species and RCD/VHD has no cure.
The RCD/VHD vaccine used to protect pet rabbits is made of a base
of RCD/VHD virus grown in live rabbits who die from VHD.
How would authorities expect to make a safe vaccine to protect humans or other
non-rabbit species if the need arose if they cannot make a clean
in-vitro vaccine to protect rabbits. Authorities around the world have not been
able to grow the RCD/VHD virus outside of live animals.
