Calicivirus Victim

(1st September 1997)

Wellington: An official with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in New Zealand has been suspended for allegedly helping South Island farmers spread the deadly rabbit calicivirus disease, Radio New Zealand reported yesterday. The Ministry so far has been trying to contain the disease, which a group of renegade farmers in the Mackenzie Basin area, of South Island imported illegally from Australia in a last-ditch attempt to combat a rabbit population which has devastated the terrain for the past 100 years.
