In New Zealand, where farmers illegally imported RCD/RHDV as a biocontrol of European rabbits and made their own RHDV baits to spread across the land, it has been noticed that some wild rabbits are hopping around with their ears rotting away while dying over a protracted period of time from RHDV. A researcher has shown a direct correlation between the "ear-rot" in the NZ rabbits and their infection with RHDV. This article has four close up photos of rabbit ears in various stages of ear-rot. You can read about this strange phenomena (seen no where else in the world) in the February edition of the NZ Veterinary Journal. If you wish to order a copy, the price is NZ$18.00 . Contact the New Zealand Veterinary Association to subscribe to the New Zealand Veterinary Journal or to purchase a copy of the February article.
