THE JEWISH DISPUTES WITH OUR LORD
AS CONTAINED IN THE GOSPEL OF ST JOHN
The Jewish disputes with Our Lord as contained in the Gospel of St. John are only of interest to us if we study the way the Son of God handled them. We cannot speak of Our Lord’s disputes with the Jews, as Our Lord never disputed, but was constantly attacked by His adversaries on many fronts.
In all of this we admire His patience, His charity, His skill in debate and the unfailing way He upheld truth and unravelled error. No wonder Pope Leo XIII in his first encyclical Aeterni Patris of 1879 could write: “Upholding the truth and contending with error is imitating the charity of Christ.” All the popes after him have underscored this important observation in at least one of their encyclicals.
When we read what the Jews threw up at Our Lord in their irrational disputes, we are staggered by their wilful blindness in the presence of so much Light. In this they are the precursors of the worldwide effluent which at present is feeding the great movement of apostasy organised in every country for the establishment of the One-World ‘church’ (Pope St. Pius X in Our Apostolic Mandate of 1910).
In Our Blessed Lord’s case and in what is going on in our times, there can only be one outcome: the visible presence of the Lamb of God and of His unique Catholic Church here on earth will be done away with, but only to give the Head and His Mystical Body the chance to redeem and save all those who in time will avail themselves of the torrents of graces that have been unleashed and will be unleashed by the sacred martyrdom of the entire Body, both Head and members. (Frits Albers)
