AMBROSE ELDRIDGE 1816-1860


Ambrose Eldridge was born circa 1818. He showed his birthplace as Greater Milton, near Oxford, England on the birth registration of both his unnamed son in 1856 and his daughter Elizabeth Martha in 1857. He is thought to be the Mr A Eldridge who travelled on the Alfred that left Plymouth, England on 17 Sep 1838 and arrived at Sydney, New South Wales on 16 Jan 1839. He is listed as a druggist in the City of Sydney Directory of 1844-1845. He was a witness at the marriage on 15 Feb 1845 between his sister Isabella Martha Eldridge and Joseph Peck Rees at St James Church of England, Sydney.

Ambrose married Mary Holmes on 20 Apr 1846 at Sydney. Mary was born in England. In 1847 they moved to Brisbane and in 1849 Ambrose took over the chemist and druggest business of John Taggart at Medical Hall, North Brisbane. Mary died on 28 Sep 1856 at Eagle Farm and Ambrose then married Mary Cannon on 15 Oct 1856 at Brisbane. She was born at Ballymyre, County Armagh, Ireland. In 1852 Ambrose and another druggist, Mr Poole, pioneered cotton growing in the Brisbane area and in 1855 the London Newspaper the Daily News of 13 Nov 1855, reporting on The Great Exposition in Paris that Eldridge and Co., Brisbane, Australia was one of the parties to receive First Class Medals in the Nineteenth Class - Cotton Manufacturers. Ambrose died on 10 May 1860 at Ipswich, QLD aged 45 and his father is recorded was being John York Eldridge. In a report in the Brisbane Courier of 21 Sep 1883 on the marriage on 13 Sep 1883 of his daughter Elizabeth Martha she is shown as the neice of Revd. J A Eldridge, Vicar of Bishops Wilton, Yorkshire.

Mary remarried on 8 Aug 1861 to Hugh Maxwell and they had a son named Hugh who was born on 11 May 1862 and died on 30 Nov 1928. Following the death of Hugh senior on 7 Jun 1863 Mary married for a third time on 5 Sep 1864 to Patrick Lamph. They had 6 children, Margaret born 9 Sep 1865, Patrick 8 Apr 1868, Catherine 24 Aug 1870, Mary Ann 20 Jun 1873, Rosa Teresa 9 Mar 1876 and Flora born 23 Nov 1878 with all births being registered at Brisbane. Mary died on 4 Jul 1919 at Brisbane, QLD.
