'The Hash' is a worldwide organisation best described as a social gathering of people who like to run, jog or walk for exercise and enjoy a beer or two and a chat afterwards. It has no formal structure and the motto of: "drinkers with a running problem" really describes the off-beat nature of the group.
WACT derives its name from Wednesday Australian Capital Territory Hash House Harriers. It is a mixed hash that runs in Canberra every Wednesday evening. In summer there is a mix of pub, home and forest locations and in winter, a few more pub runs to get out of the cold.
The runs are non-competitive 'hare and hounds' style, either cross-country or around the suburbs and are usually not arduous, although an occasional marathon can creep in. WACT caters for walkers as well as the more athletically minded.
Cost is minimal, with a nominal charge for each run collected on the night, and the after-run social gatherings are usually serviced by a bucket offering a good range of drinks at cheap prices.
Visitors are always most welcome and newcomers need just turn up on the night. However, please feel free to contact any of the committee if you'd like an introduction.
