The legendary Canadian Blues Guitarist and Singer Songwriter, HARRY MANX, last here in 2010, returns to our shores in 2012 for a series of guest appearances at some of our best known music festivals. This will be followed by a national tour in May and June that will see him play at the Fly By Night.
Harry Manx has spent years fusing eastern musical traditions with the blues, switching effortlessly between conventional guitars, harmonica, and banjo and the decidedly different Mohan veena, a 20-stringed instrument invented by Manx Indian mentor, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.
Manx is often referred to as the Mysticssippi Blues Man, because of his expertise in melding both East and West music together and therefore, creating musical short stories that wed the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas.
Over the last 10 years, Harry Manx has released 11 Albums and has garnered a room full of awards including, seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and has won CBC Radios, Great Canadian Blues Award, in 2007.
His most recent accomplishment was receiving yet another Juno Nomination for Blues Album of the Year, for his release, Bread and Buddha in 2010. Harry's newest album ISLE of MANX has just been released and he describes it as being the Desert Island Collection; its an album of 15 songs, chosen by Harry, that reflect his musical journey.

In a career spanning over 35 years, numerous tours of the USA, Canada, The British Isles, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Eric Bogle and long time music collaborator John Munro make a welcome return to WA late May and Early June 2012.

-- WAMi Northbridge Saturday Spectacular
Lineups Revealed The 2012 Northbridge Saturday Spectacular, Supported by the City of Perth will happen on Saturday June 2, and feature 56 local acts playing eight stages from 12 midday to 6pm.
With two outdoor stages (Northbridge Piazza and Perth Cultural Centre Wetlands Stage), and six indoor venues (Ya Ya's, The Mustang Bar, Universal Bar, The Court, Brass Monkey and The Bird), the Saturday Spectacular will once again be a smorgasbord of musical goodness, with all genres and styles represented on the day.
The Brass Monkey acoustic stage will open with the sweet tunes of 2011 Song of the Year Grand Prize Winner Timothy Nelson, before solo acoustic pop musician Jason Ayres, sweet indie folk duo Patient Little Sister, foot stomping blues rocker Chris Matthews, soulful blues and roots performer Joel Barker, guitar playing singer/songwriter Morgan Bain and raw blues and folk performer Junior Bowles.
The huge celebration of WA music is free, giving Perth the chance to see some of their favourite local bands performing around the Northbridge precinct. As in past years, the WAMi Craft Awards will be presented at the various venues throughout the day as below, and RTRfm will be broadcasting live from the event at Northbridge Piazza.

-- Denmark Festival of Voice Denmark Arts is proud to announce a great line-up of acts for the 2012 Denmark Festival of Voice at the beginning of June.
From Melbourne comes Aluka. With a passion for experimentation and creativity, the Aluka Ladies are on a constant quest to reinvent A cappella, refuting that a vocalist was somehow less of a technical artist than someone with an instrument in their hands. They have fostered a musical bond, forming inventive sound scapes of vivid sonic colour with nothing but their vocal chords.
Our spectacular massed singing events during the festival will be led by Melbourne-based Stephen Taberner, a great choir leader and performer who will be giving the Big Sing workshops and other special treats. And he will appear on the same program with the brilliant and bizarre Spooky Men of the West, a phenomenon he instigated, in concert, workshops and in the street!
As well as Stephen, soloists who will inspire and entertain include Gina Williams, a singer-songwriter-story teller, a Noongar daughter with proud Kija links - her music lifts your spirits and soothes your soul. Also Rory Faithfield is home from Ireland with wistful, romantic, deeply felt songs, beautifully crafted and sung with a voice that pours sincerity and emotion over every line and note. And Valanga Khoza is back to explore South African stories, traditional rhythms and harmonies through voice and movement.
Choirs continue to be a prominent part of the festival and this year include A Kappella Munda, Bunbury Men of Song, Cleanskins, Gay & Lesbian Singers of WA, Madjitil Moorna, The Real Sing, with local choirs Eklektika, SeeTB, Something In the Air, Cantare and Louise McKenna with Southern Skylarks. Choirs will be showcased in the Voice Moves Big Sound Concert including festival favourite Bernard Carney’s Working Voices.
The Have A Go News Festival Club will be back, with more opportunities for singing together than ever before, including a special treat or two. And as always, a whole world of workshops will be offered by our headliners and many more. And then there is the growing ‘Fringe” to the festival with events in the Denmark Hotel, local wineries, cafes and a garden-roofed hobbit house. Something for everyone!

This year we have a total of 23 Concerts and 21 Workshops held over 3 nights and 2 days. The first concert which is a free Children's event starts at 4 pm on Friday 1st. The last event is the Festival Club continuing until the late hours of Sunday night. It's a weekend you will have happy memories about for years to come. It's a full programme which will have you scratching your head wondering which events you really want to enjoy. The Spirit of Okinawa, Japan.
Kijimuna take their name from a small Okinawan mythical wood spirit. The members play the sanshin, a three-string instrument also from Okinawa. Kijimuna's repertoire is a mix of traditional Okinawan folk songs and contemporary Okinawan pop songs. They are sung in the Okinawan language and in the regional dialects of the Ryukyu Islands. The troupe's aim is to preserve and promote the Okinawan culture through their music. Other instruments incorporated by Kijimuna include Okinawan taiko drums and sanba, a castanet-like instrument consisting of three small pieces of wood. Special guest, multi-instrumentalist Chiho Kagawa, will play sanshin and sing.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to choir practice, along come The Spookies. The Spooky Men of the West - an all-male 17-piece a cappella group - are the western chapter of The Spooky Men's Chorale, brainchild of Stephen Taberner. They present a unique vocal brand of pointless grandeur, magnificent manhomerie and poignant pathos, singing a range of ancient Georgian songs alongside originals and their special versions of well-known favourites. Their manly voices and tender blend will make you laugh or cry - possibly both at the same time.

With elegant accompaniment from some of Ireland and Australasia’s top musicians, they bring us on a journey of movement and migration, through leaving and homecoming, sharing with us the beauty and a poignancy of nations steeped in love, loss and joy. Celtic Divas will introduce the beautiful Irish duo Lumiere, featuring Éilis Kennedy and Pauline Scanlon. We’ll also hear the sublime vocals of Noriana Kennedy and Nicola Joyce (Grada) as they weave an evocative and haunting showcase.
Biography:
Four of Ireland’s most prominent folk singers are heading to Australasia for what promises to be an unforgettable musical experience.
Lumiere is a duo from Dingle, in West Kerry, featuring Pauline Scanlon and Éilís Kennedy. These two singers have amassed a huge song collection from their families and the rich traditions of their homeland - steeped in history and the Irish language. In a singing style that is rare and unique, Lumiere takes something that is age old and re-imagines it simply and beautifully. Since joining forces with legendary producer John Reynolds (Sinead O Connor and U2), Lumiere has been enjoying critical acclaim all over the globe, and now bring their gift of storytelling in song and on stage to New Zealand.
Nicola Joyce, best known as the lead singer of Gráda, has released two critically acclaimed albums to date. The latest, Natural Angle, was recorded with Grammy award-winning icon and producer, Tim O’Brien, and was named by USA’s National Public Radio as one of the Top 5 Folk Albums of 2010. Having toured extensively over 25 countries in the last six years, Nicola has earned her prominent place in a new generation of Irish folk singers.
Noriana Kennedy, from Dublin, presents a songbook stretching generations and diverse genres. Likened by many to a young Mary Black, she has the gift of being able to touch the listener through understatement and simplicity. Her debut album Ebb n Flow gained her international recognition and marks the first assured steps into what promises to be a long journey.
The Band: The musical director of Celtic Divas is Gerry Paul from New Zealand. With his driving guitar style Gerry is one of Irelands most favoured folk guitarists with ten years experience playing with top contemporary Irish group, Gráda. The Celtic Diva band also features Australian fiddle talent Chris Stone. Chris is an exquisite and elegant fiddle player with a background in Scottish and classical styles. Hailing from Galway, singer songwriter, Noelie McDonnell voice and guitar playing has brought him to share the stage with such luminiaries as Greg Brown, Eddie Reader and Luka Bloom.

The Pepperjacks are an accomplished acoustic ensemble from Albany, performing original music and arrangements of tunes that encompass the genres of folk, blues, bluegrass and ragtime. The band uses a range of fine acoustic instruments that support close-harmony singing, delivering a joyful sound that crosses all age barriers. The Pepperjacks move from up-beat, toe-tapping dance tunes to song-stories that reflect life experiences. Their growing list of tunes sung in different languages now includes the occasional foray into continental ballads sung in Italian and some French 'Cajun' songs.

Dr Richard Walley is a Nyoongar artist, spokesman, musician and dancer who practices multiple Nyoongar artforms with the blessing and guidance of his elders. He and his family will present an enthralling evening in three acts. Koora - 'the past' - features traditional music, dance and stories connecting people, places, plants and animals. Yay - 'the present' - blends traditional and contemporary music to integrate stories of urban and bush life with movement. Boorda - 'the future' - is mesmerising, contemporary Indigenous trance dance.

Michael Zolker of Daramad teams up with Josh Hogan and Glenn Rogers from Taal Naan and Mukti, to showcase the Indian and Middle Eastern flavours of The Silk Road infused with rhythm. Playing original tunes, as well as compositions by such world music greats as Anouar Brahem, Avishai Cohen and Selva Ganesh, The Beaten Luthier brings the ancient music of the Oud together with the modern hybrid Sitar-Guitar (Rogers' own creation). Join them as they cook up a mid-winter storm.

Songwriting Wilderness Retreat
Spend three days at a remote wilderness site free from distractions to allow the creative energy to arise within as you contemplate the unstructured world around you. You can work individually or collaborate in your songwriting. At the end of each day there will be song sharing around the campfire.
Koora is a base camp for desert pilgrims who wish to experience the wilderness and explore desert spirituality, alone and in community. Koorarawalyee is 435km east of Perth along Great Eastern Highway. It can be reached by either road or rail.
Each year Rev Dr Anna Killigrew and Rev Peter Harrison organise a number or retreats that include Walking Hunt’s Track, Winter Wilderness Retreat and Wild Women’s Retreat. This year they will include a Songwriting Widerness Retreat.
A five million star venue provides single accommodation for up to 16 people in dongas, with camp fire, shared toilet and shower facilities, group preparation of meals, and close contact with local flora, fauna and weather. This is a wilderness experience, not a holiday destination.
The Favourite Activities of recent pilgrims have been:
Wild camping, bush walking, morning and evening prayer, retreat programs, land restoration activities, historic site conservation, artistic pursuits, exploring the history of this site, companionship around the campfire, and joining in wilderness retreats.
