Port Catherine
What is it ?
- Port Catherine is a grab for an area of sea bed and the adjacent
sand beach and dune area "piggybacked" on an industrial land remediation
project which will become a residential estate and that aspect is not in
dispute. The unacceptable addition to the remediation proposal will obliterate
the ~1.25km of sand beach and dunes and construct rock groynes 400m out to
sea enclosing the ocean floor. The contentious areas are largely Crown
land and Parks and Recreation ie public equity, and the developers propose
to infill the ocean
and convert it to residential
canals with a small (< 20% of the resumed area) boating activities area
.
This development represents the first construction of this type for the
Perth metropolitan area and raises a number of concerns
. The present status is that submissions regarding
an amendment to the Metropolitan Regional Scheme to allow rezoning
of public and other land to urban are being considered by the West Australian
Planning Commission. Public consultation was minimal before the proposal
was issued and the CCAC group has been attempting to raise awareness
( pamphlet
) of the issue, encourage feedback to politicians, and request a true planning
approach involving public consultation.
Where is it ? Owen Anchorage
; the beach between the disused heritage listed South Fremantle Power
Station (excluded
from the development
- but clearly earmarked for separate redevelopment) and Coogee Beach.
