Huon Valley Theater Inc. formed in
1988 out of the defunct Huon Theater
Company and membership has grown steadily over the years.
Now 40-60 people
could be involved with the group at any one time. HVT has
gained
recognition and reputation with each production it
presents. The public
look for HVT shows and inquire about participating.
Huon Valley Theater is based at the Huonville Town Hall
and literally
performs magic with very limited resources. Being
non-government funded,
the company has to be self-supporting. Rural isolation
means a smaller
resource base for funding and talent.
HVT
is an amateur company with high standards and a
professional outlook.
Because HVT encourages community activity and uses local
talent in its
productions, a wide section of people have become
involved, especially the
youth.
Drew
Bennett, a former HVT member, saw the value of
establishing an
off-shoot group for the younger members. The idea
was to give them an
opportunity to learn the skills of theater. The
group has grown and now
attempts full-scale productions of their own.
Huon
Valley Theater currently runs two productions a year. The
mid-year
production is usually a comedy or drama and it gives
actors and directors a
chance to produce more challenging material.
The end of year production is usually a popular musical
and the group
relies on this production to raise most of its funds. HVT
has also produced
a variety night each year, where members are asked to
provide some varied
and interesting acts. Funds raised by this venture have
usually been
donated to charity.
