"The Moonlight Marathon"
1st & 2nd November, 2008
111 kilometres, from Windsor to Brooklyn, overnight in the full moon (weather permitting!)
Familiarisation paddles - contact organisers for dates
Entry Fee varies
Sponsorship minimum fundraising required - amount varies
This is basically a flat water race, but you still have to be aware of shallow water and snags in the upper reaches, at least one incoming tide, river traffic and oyster leases near the finish and possibly standing waves. All this is mostly at night!
- There are trophies and prizes for class winners. Non-competitive paddlers who just want to finish are started first for their "Brooklyn or Bust" attempt! All paddlers receive a medallion for finishing.
- Most paddle craft are eligible: racing, touring, recreational, skis.
- You will need a support crew.
- The race was first held in 1977 with 250 paddlers participating and $8,500 being raised. In 1998 over 600 paddlers participated and over $100,000 was raised. Funds go to the Arrow Foundation for research into "fighting cancer with bone marrow".

*NOTE: W.A. paddlers may be interested to know that well known local paddler and canoe entrepreneur, Alwyn Duke, holds the record for the class: Open Single Short Recreational Craft (Finn). He completed the 1997 race in 10 hours, 53 minutes and 7 seconds.
