This is a small, informal club with mainly touring and white water interests. Several of our members do the Avon Descent each year. Advice and instruction are available for anybody interested in taking up paddling. We meet on Tuesdays at around 5 pm.

. . . A Pretty Good Weekend!

The Inaugural South West Canoe Club Weekend Paddling Extravaganza, 3rd & 4th February

"What a success!!"

The twilight paddle on Saturday evening was blown away and so were the dolphins. We had a hard paddle accross the estuary into a head wind then a cruisy paddle back. Peter Martin, Judy and Bronwyn attempted the crossing in their Canadian. Had to get out (stepped out into a foot of water) empty and proceed to return on the surf waves - they had a good time. About 50 came to the BBQ, that's going by the number of BBQ packs sold. The wind settled but blew enough to keep the mozzies at bay.

The Race was held in a stiff easterly with 50 entries, well supported by the Perth paddlers. The Telstra Van provided a good base to work from and protect us from the sun.

The overall winner for the handicap race was Mary Morgan, from Bunbury, who started paddling several months ago. Second was the infamous Penny Bates and third, (this was not rigged) John Bates. 1st and 2nd got a Caltex sports pack, sports bag, hat and bottle plus some cash. The fastest time of the day was Darryl Long's, with Mark Alderson who started a bit late!!! 6 seconds behind. Third was Lee Davey (15yo).

What a mixture of craft: kayaks, skis, outriggers, and a C2. The "Have a Go" bit was helped out by Rosi and Wayne, who got people trying out different boats, supplied by Jason from Canoe WA, Ann & Simon with Davenwood boats and the SWCC's boats. Heaps to try out. Everyone who competed, tried a boat or volunteered got a Telsta showbag. - Robyn Harris, President, South West Canoe Club
