6/6/01 To
all new Avon Descenters,
Welcome to "Paddling News", regular emailouts to those
with an interest in paddling. If you do not wish to receive
these emails (about once weekly) please indicate by return email.
The emails are particularly
useful for lost/found paddles and other gear during training
for the Avon Descent, so do make use of them if you lose your
paddle somewhere in the Valley!
As well as the Avon Descent
website ( http://www.avondescent.asn.au ) you should check out
"Canoeing in Western Australia" website http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe
which has useful information. Look at the 'Bulletin Board'
(for sale, lost, found), 'Water Levels' and further down the
main page 'News for local paddlers' to keep up to date.
cheers, Robyn Khorshid
7/6/01 MOODIARRUP
MARATHON
which has been held in country WA for the last 17 years will
now regretfully be discontinued. Organising committee would
love to hearif you have any ideas for another fund raising event
(sporting or otherwise). Email Roz Abbott - towerrinning@bigpond.com
------------------------------------------
TOODYAY WATER LEVEL
on WRC website looks strange indeed! Reason being (according
to local sources) the river has been dammed up at Goomalling
Bridge where a new bridge is being built. But don't worry, the
first good rains will see the dam washed away. Also, bypass construction
around Northam has used water from Katrine Pool so it will have
a bit further to fill up than usual before the river can flow.
------------------------------------------
WALYUNGA WATER LEVEL
On Saturday arvo last weekend the level had made it to the bottom
of the gauge (wooden). Still not paddlable, unless you want to
go for a scrape. (Thanks to Will Blackshaw for this info.)
Also from Elaine Lennox, "0.2 m on Sunday".
------------------------------------------
FROM MARGARET JEFFERY, Slalom Racing Co-ordinator
Slalom Race 2 in the winter slalom series will take place on
Sunday, 10th June.
THERE IS A CHANGE OF VENUE: THE RACE WILL BE HELD AT HESTER PARK,
NEAR NICHOLSON ROAD, NOT
AT WALYUNGA AS PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED.
Unfortunately the water level at Walyunga is still too low, but
this presents an opportunity for our novices
to hone their skills through the gates!
Pre-race coaching 9am - 10am
Registration 10am
Briefing 10.15am
Race commences 10.30am
Paddlers new to slalom are
encouraged to come along and have a go. Pre-race
coaching is available at no cost prior to the race, and for those
who do
not have slalom kayaks, some spare kayaks will be available.
Juniors are
also very welcome. Race costs are $8 per adult, $5 per junior.

DAMSEL IN DISTRESS
Leonie Cockman is not sure about installing the footrest on her
Perception Swing Sit-on-top. If you can help out this novice
Avon Descenter with some advice please email her: leoniec@space.net.au
1. Do the screws go on the inside of the boat? This is possible
but quite tricky!!
2. Do the footrest systems come in different lengths for different
models?
3.The bit the footrest slides up and down on seems to be a bit
too long for the section I need to attach it to. It will have
to bend a little for me to fit it securely. Is this the usual?
