Week 1 /April
Tragic Accident

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Canoeing WA President, Brevis Choate, died earlier this week as a result of head injuries sustained in a mountain biking accident on Saturday. We all extend our deepest sympathy to Shirley and her young family. CWA Executive Officer, Lindsay Wilund, writes of Brevis' important contribution to canoeing <http://www.wa.canoe.org.au/default.asp?Page=7750>here.

White Water Park - Can you please help?
"I use a PowerPoint 97 presentation to promote the White Water Park. I want to include some DVD VOB files in the presentation but cannot get my PowerPoint to run these files. If you can help please contact me on 9386 6842 / 0409 88 7011, <mailto:thorpec@icenet.net.au>thorpec@icenet.net.au
Thanks, Colin Thorpe"

Attention White Water Paddlers! - from Peter Speldewinde, Albany Canoe Club, Tuesday
"We had a big storm down on the south coast last week and had some flooding. The Frankland River is currently approaching the 13m level and rising (it's usually decent white water paddling at around 11.2ish). At 12m it is fantastic so at 13m it is going off like a frog in a sock. If you do go for a paddle at this water level watch out for the stopper at Circular Pool. It gets extremely grabby over 12m."

Rowing & Sprint/Marathon Canoeing Course
This new development is currently well under way at Champion Lakes. You can see it best by driving along Lake Road, then Lakeview Terrace, Westfield, near Armadale.

Laughter is the Best Medicine
This is the philosophy of Camp Quality, a charity for children living with cancer. As the charity receives no government assistance they need to raise funds to provide fun activities for those children and their families. Organiser, Collette Morrow, asks if there are canoeists who might be prepared to paddle the Avon Descent, either as a team or individually, and at the same time help raise funds for Camp Quality. "We would love someone to compete in the Avon Descent whilst raising money and the profile of Camp Quality, as it's such a fantastic event." Contact her if you might be interested in this worthwhile cause: 9440 575 or 0431 851 311 or <mailto:cmorrow@wa.campquality.org.au>cmorrow@wa.campquality.org.au  Website: http://www.campquality.org.au

Technique Training
Tuesday night sessions at Hines Reserve (Garratt Road Bridge)with Ramon Anderson are now from 5 - 6:30pm. Ramon says, "With the Avon just over 4 months away it is time to start cranking up the training to ensure you are adequately prepared for the event. Sessions are still just $10 which can either be paid on the night or I can bill you on a monthly basis."
Training is cancelled for next Tuesday, 12th April, owing to the funeral service for the late Brevis Choate who was Canoeing WA President.

Boats Galore
There's a huge number of second hand boats available now on the website <http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe/newsfl.html>here, including ten from Mainpeak Paddlesports.

Week 4/April
White Water Park

Here's some pics of <http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe/penrithww.html>Penrith Whitewater which I took during a recent visit. I was most impressed by the whole set up- it's well worth checking out if you're over that way. There were some juniors having instruction whilst I was there - they were impressive, too! It costs $25 per session to paddle and you can hire a boat and all the gear. You need to be competent on Grade 3 water. Otherwise you can go rafting! A full range of instruction is available, from beginner level to advanced (having paddled Grade 4 numerous times in the last year + bomb proof roll). More info' <http://penrithwhitewater.com.au>penrithwhitewater.com.au or (02) 4730 4333.
If you're not heading to Sydney soon then you'll have to wait for the Perth Whitewater Park!
