Cyclone Glenda - Mike Collister
Hal Paine of Capricorn Kayak Tours was taking some Wesley College students on a five day trip at Ningaloo Reef when Cyclone Glenda came by. The paddling was cut a little short as they hunkered down in Exmouth waiting for the worst. Fortunately they missed the brunt of the cyclone. The floodwaters receded quickly and the boys returned safely with some great stories to tell.

Week 2 /April
Fantastic News - Mark Schutze

Nearly all of the stolen Canoe Polo gear has been recovered!! Police found our kayaks, trailer and other gear (along with lots of other stolen stuff) recently. Some of it was damaged, but the majority is usable. That means we can restart our B-grade games and Beginners courses.

Thanks to everyone that helped look for it. Thanks to the Perth paddling community in general for your support. Come down and enjoy a game some time ...

Australian Canoe Polo Championships
are happening here over the Easter weekend.  Come to Beatty Park Leisure Centre on Saturday, 15th, Sunday, 16th or Monday, 17th April to see the country's best polo players in action. Games will be on throughout the day in the outdoor 50m and dive pools. Some 100 players from around Australia, including national squad members, will be competing. This is the selection event for the Australian men's and women's teams which will be competing at the World Championships in Amsterdam later this year.

WA has entered 6 teams - 2 Open, 2 Veterans, 1 Womens and 1 Junior (the first time we've had a junior team!). We would love to have a local crowd to support the WA players. So come down and scream for us! Should be a great weekend. Further info' <http://www.pcpc.canoe.org.au>www.pcpc.canoe.org.au Mark Schutze 0407 426 183, Nick O'Loughlin 0412 947 722

Avon Descent: Interstate Paddlers Needing Help
"My paddling partner from NZ and myself from Melbourne completed the Avon Descent in 2003 where we came 12th in the open K2 class. Having been a support crew on previous 2 occasions and not achieving our goal of top 10 finish in 2003 we were hoping to complete the race again in 2006.

I was wondering if anyone has a K2 ideal for the race that we could hire and pay for any repairs. We have a K2 in Melbourne specially built for the race which is hassle to transport to WA and really needs a little more rocker to improve its turning ability so we were hoping that we might be able to borrow a boat from WA which would allow us to fly across and spend more time on the river prior to the race. Ian and I have paddled for more than a total of 30 years on flat and white water so we are experienced paddlers (although the Avon is something different in a K2).
I was wondering if you could assist us as we are trying to finalise arrangements with support crew etc." David Jerram  <mailto:djerram1@bigpond.com>djerram1@bigpond.com

Avon Descent: Interstate Paddlers Needing Help
"
My partner and I would like to compete in the K2 class of this year's Avon Descent. While we have a K2 here in Melbourne, we have found it will be difficult to transport it to W.A. We have also been told it may not be ideally suited to the particular demands of the Avon.

My partner has been paddling for over 20 years and is a former Australian representative in marathon. I, too, have been paddling for over 20 years, and while not quite at the same level, I have done a lot of marathon and wildwater (down river) racing.

We were wondering if anyone has a K2 ideal for the race that they aren't using and that we could hire and pay for any repairs. If you are able to help us out could you please contact me at <mailto:robrussell@alphalink.com.au>robrussell@alphalink.com.au "

Need a Partner?
Here's a virtual one for training and it doesn't argue! It's the Garmin Fore Runner 201 which is designed to help you pace yourself against an imaginary paddler (or runner, etc.). Strap it to your boat or your wrist and keep yourself in alert mode (rather than daydream mode) during training. Check out the details at the Garmin website: http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner201/ There's also a model with a heart rate monitor, the ForeRunner 301: http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner301/ They're both available at Octocom, 135 Kewdale Road, Kewdale, 9353 3366. (Don't forget to mention that you're a paddler - as the owner is, too, and he's promised to "look after you"!)
