Week 1 /February
Dwellingup Wildfires

Long time paddler, Dave Hawke (who has been fighting the fires as part of his job with Department of Environment and Conservation) tells us the whitewater sections of the Middle and Lower Murray have been burnt out. Both sides of the river are affected, from the first rapid of the Middle Murray right to the bottom of Termination, the last rapid of the Lower Murray. This means that there is a likelihood of more fallen logs in the river, so keep a look-out for this next winter. Fire burns out the base of the trees so they fall over and also upper branches fall off.

Andrew McAuley

By now all paddlers are aware of the tragic loss of New South Wales paddler, Andrew McAuley, whilst he was en route to being the first to cross the Tasman Sea in a kayak, just a short distance from achieving his goal. I know all West Oz paddlers join me in extending deepest sympathy to his wife, family and friends.

Andrew McAuley Support Fund
A support fund has been set up to help Vicki McAuley and family by the NSW Sea Kayak Club. To make a donation, please go <http://www.nswseakayaker.asn.au/>here where NSW Sea Kayak Club has set up a section on their website. If you have any queries regarding this please email their vice-president:

City Lights Long Distance Event
Sunday, 4th March
: 30km paddle down the Canning and then up the Swan, paddling through twilight and into a moonlit evening and finishing at Ascot Kayak Club. It's a new event added to the WA canoeing calendar.

Entrants must compete as a pair (and, yes, a K2 counts) to provide increased safety and visibility for the night paddling section. Starting from the Canning River Canoe Club at Riverton Bridge, the course winds along the Canning River and out into the wide expanses of the Swan. Passing through Perth Water around sunset should provide a highlight, as will paddling on into the early evening. The smell of a BBQ dinner will greet you as you approach the finish at Ascot Kayak Club.

You may choose to enter as a relay team, with changeover at the Narrows Bridge creating a 13km daylight leg and a 17km twilight/night leg. Paddlers will "light up" glowsticks and white lights at the Narrows.

Entry is $20pp ($30 non CWA members), with an additional $20 late fee after Wed., 28th Feb. Relay entry is $15/$20pp.
Registration will open at 4:15pm and close at 5:15pm, with a compulsory briefing at 5:30pm. First grid away will be 6:00pm.

Entry forms are available as <http://staging.ipinternet.com.au:53207/resource/CityLightsEntryForm2007.pdf>downloadable PDF files ,from Ascot or Canning River Canoe Clubs, or from Event Coordinator, Dave Boldy <mailto:boldy@iinet.net.au>boldy@iinet.net.au 0413 986 248.

From Marcus Demuth (U.S. paddler from Brooklyn, New York, attempting to paddle from Albany to Perth)
Wednesday, 14th:
"My broken boat was recovered yesterday by the local authorities from a quite inaccessible beach north of Bunbury, and I am at a local campground in Bunbury now. A friend will give me and my kayak a ride to Perth tomorrow, Thursday, which would mean I could do the Rottnest Swim support with my repaired kayak, which will be my task today and should work out (I did a similar repair two weeks ago when the stern section came off). - Marcus
(He was hoping to accompany a swim team to Rotto on Saturday, a great experience for a visiting paddler. Is there someone out there with whom he could join in? <mailto:marcusdemuth@yahoo.com>marcusdemuth@yahoo.com)
