Welcome, Marcus
We have a visitor from New York, Marcus Demuth, coming to inspect our dramatic southern coastline west of Albany and then on to Perth in February - by kayak.  He will be joined for some of the time by John di Nucci and Kelvin Lewis. His interesting website, <http://marcusdemuth.com/default.aspx>http://marcusdemuth.com/default.aspx  includes an amusing version of a New Yorker's perception of Australia:

Moore River - Guilderton
Here's a great place for the family to spend a summer day. You can explore the river for about 8km or so upstream, past soaring sand dunes and the occasional small sandy beach nesteld amongst the trees. There's plenty of different boats to choose from - "pedalos", sit-ons, kayaks, even power boats at the hire business at Guilderton: <http://members.iinet.com.au/~rokhor/canoe/moorehire.html>Explorer Boat Hire

Not Only, But Also . . .
Terry Bolland reminds us that delightful Lake Leschenaultia in the hills is close by if you're looking for a shady picnic spot to spend the day with the family. It's a picturesque and a safe place to paddle and canoe hire is available.

3. Paddler wanted for Rotto swim on 17th February 2007. Aim to get there in around 5 1/2 hours. Selection criteria is minimal. The primary selection criteria is the ability to be there on the day. If you are interested please contact John at

Rotto Swimmers Need Paddlers!
Saturday, February 17

Urgently seeking a reasonably experienced paddler to replace me for this year's Rotto swim. I paddle for a Japanese team every year but I've just realised my parents 50th wedding anniversary is the same day. It is a paid position - around $200 and for a single swimmer (around 7-8 hrs swim).  John Igloi  0413 993 192

Solo swimmer requires a second paddler for solo crossing to share load. She is fairly fast swimmer and has been let down by another. Please ring myself so I can arrange phone numbers etc. - Alan Penny 0418 926 546 or 9300 8802.

Tasman Sea Crossing . . .
Andrew Linton (local sea kayaker who has paddled across Torres Strait and Bass Strait) keeps us up to date with Tasmanian adventurer Andrew Mcauley's renewed effort at this 1600km open sea trip by kayak: " He left . . . days ago (Saturday, 13th) and this time it's looking good. My mate Laurie Ford saw him off again." The first attempt was aborted in order to solve one or two problems that arose.
Go to the following web address to watch his real time progress.

Casper, the Cockpit
The Tasmanian adventurer has designed a simple but amazing piece of equipment which enables him to sleep easy at night whilst on the high seas - and the boat rights itself when capsized! Read more about it by perusing the website above.

Other Amazing Sea Paddles
Andrew Linton also sends us this <http://www.paddlermagazine.com/issues/2003_4/article_221.shtml>link to a page on Paddler Magazine's website. They have listed what they consider are the ten greatest sea kayak voyages of all time. Australian Paul Caffyn's around Australia trip is there. Andrew (Linton) says, "Some nice info there, but they'll have to update it when Andrew gets to New Zealand !"

From West Oz paddler, Sandy Robson, on her way kayaking around Australia
"There is now a map on my website for people to follow my progress. Click on the diary icon and the map comes up:

Collie River Water Level
The water release for this weekend is expected to be as follows:
Saturday, 350 - 400 megalitres/day (about 1m-1.05m at the gauging station)
Sunday, maybe up to 450 megalitres/day (1.15m) (good level)
It is hoped the "Wellington Dam Volume Release Report" on Harvey Water's website will be fixed on Monday. (IT person has been on hols).
New white water paddlers should go <http://members.iinet.com.au/~rokhor/canoe/waterlevcoll.html>here to see what all of the above figures mean.

"Real Men Wear Skirts"*
Go <http://www.cafepress.com/buy/sea%2520kayaking/-/cfpt2_/copt_/cfpt_/source_searchBox/x_25/y_10>here to see an amazing website with every kind of paddling logo &/or witticism imaginable on t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other paraphernalia like calendars, caps, mouse pads, stickers and much more: "Roll Your Own", "Old Paddlers Never Die (they just keel over)", and so on. You can search for your preferred discipline, eg., white water/ flat water kayaking, touring, sea kayaking, canoeing, though there's a lot of overlap.

Slalom Results - from Colin Scully
"As you probably know, the WA slalom team did really well at the Schools' and National Championships in Eildon, Victoria. The official website doesn't rank the results by age group so I've gone through them to make it easier for anybody who may be interested in seeing how they all went. Needless to say they picked up a heap of medals." Go <http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe/locpad.html>here to see the WA results by age group.

Down River Nationals - from Colin Scully
"On top of all that Josh Kippin did extremely well in the DR races winning gold in Schools 18 yrs and also gold (18) in two other races in the National DR races held after the slalom comps."

Another Paddler Wanted for Rotto Swim, Feb 17
"Mrs Daka Grobes would like a relief paddler to share the load. She can be contacted on 0434 919 471 or 9594 2167 . They are a team of four and have a 7m craft which is coming back to Freo after the event If someone can assist her please call."

Canoe Polo Champ
Local lad, Alastair Fyfe, 16 yrs, has been selected to play canoe polo in the Australian U18 team at the Oceania Championships to be held in Adelaide, 12th-14th April. He'll be playing against teams from USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South American countries. As well as being a canoe polo expert, Alastair is a keen white water paddler and play boater, tackles some of the marathon races and is a member of the Avon Support Unit (swiftwater rescue group which supports the Avon Descent).

"The Dreamtime Voyage"
I have just read this book, Paul Caffyn's tale of his 1981 around Australia paddle. What an amazing feat! It's recommended reading for all paddlers, not just sea kayakers. He had white water skills before he started undertaking marathon sea voyages and this certainly helped with handling the tidal races (like rapids in the ocean) that he met in the Kimberleys. He paddled alone for most of the voyage. Google is a great tool to let you zoom in on his route.

I came across a few familiar paddling names in the book: Terry Bolland gets a mention, as do Ian and Sandy Maley (parents of top C1 slalom paddler, Kynan) and Barry, the white water paddling guru from Albany.

The book is available in the public library system (you may need to request it from other than your local library). However I'm going to add it to my paddling books collection, as it was such a moving read.

From Mike Wood, Mountain Designs: sea kayaking slide show
"Al Bakker from Southern Sea Ventures will be here tomorrow, Thursday, 1st February. 6pm, to do a slide show "Sea Kayaking Around The World - Antarctica, Fiji, Articand Europe". It'll be held at Mountain Designs, Perth, 862 Hay St, Al is a great presenter so come along and have a look at some fantastic trips around the world. I've personally done two with Al and he runs a great trip!"

More Boats Needed
"We are in the process of replacing the old kayaks used by the TID paddlers and increasing the number of available boats."
If you have a boat lying around in the shed the TID (Talent Identification Squad- sprint) need more boats for their beginners -so if you're feeling generous contact Edna Rovira, Chairman, Flatwater Committee - <mailto:rovira@bigpond.net.au>rovira@bigpond.net.au

From Laurie Ford (Tasmanian sea kayaker)
"Deary me. Andrew McAuley is from NSW, NOT Tasmania." (For new readers Andrew is crossing the Tasman Sea in a kayak - alone.) <http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html>http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html
