Week 1 /October
Blackwood River- Geegelup Cup Teams' Race

See yourself (and others) on video! . . . "from Photographers' Rapid, and I think I got footage or photos of everyone in the teams race. . . . so if anyone wants to see him/herself (and everyone else) they can take a look. The link is below:

WA world class paddler, Robin Bell, wraps up his latest race series (written in September):
"The weather on Saturday was stormy, with brief times of strong wind and heavy rain. Not the most ideal racing conditions. The course was technical which suited me fine. There were only a couple of brief periods between gates where you could just paddle and not set up for a move. Qualifying in third meant I was third last off. I managed to watch Christian Fabris (team mate) and a few others down the course, checking that the lines I had chosen were the right ones. After a quick check I was ready, nervous but ready. The race is also Olympic selection, which is a big deal and adds to the nerves. For canoe the top six nations are selected, which is roughly 12 boats.

My run times were almost identical 96 secs. I had a penalty on the second run which gave me an overall run time of 195, good enough for bronze. It's been a good season, 2 medals out of 4 international races, and qualified the Olympic spot for Australia.

Where to from here . . . ?
I am back in Sydney for a week where I will be a guest at the motor show with Nissan. Nissan have been good enough to sponsor me with an X-Trail leading up to Beijing. I leave on 15th October for training in Beijing for 2 weeks. Then I will be in New Zealand for 3 weeks leaving at the of November."

From all in WA congratulations to our superstar C1 Slalom paddler on the Olympic selection!

What is California Paddle 2007?
California Paddle 2007 is a world record-breaking expedition by Tom Jones, an extreme endurance athlete and environmental activist. Tom will become the first person in history to paddle the entire 1250-mile coast of California on nothing more than a 14-ft. paddleboard, his support/chase boats are 2 personal watercraft. "Why am I doing it?", he says. "To draw attention to the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans and to empower people to do something about it. It's all part of The Campaign for a Plastic-Free Ocean. We want to change corporate, government and individual behavior to reduce the pollution and restore the ocean."

Surf Skis Available at Kayaks 4 U, Mandurah
Wayne of Kayaks 4 U says he has the Epic skis coming & demos of the three models are available for persons to try, seven days a week, weather permitting.

"The Epic V10, V10L & V10Sport are no.1 in the world of ocean racing at present. They have a very low centre of gravity making them very stable for a performance ski. Unlike some others the footwell is also low making it very comfortable to paddle. Each of the craft come in three optional lay ups. A full carbon can be requested as a special order. Shipment is due very soon. These skis are without question the most advanced ocean going skis ever produced! Try one of our demo skis and see for yourself!" Suitable for 50kg paddlers to 120kg paddlers, irrespective of paddling experience.

Dubrovnik Paddle
<http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe/dubrovpadd07.html>Here's some pics of what it's like on a half day's paddle from the old town of Dubrovnik, Croatia, in Autumn: rugged and awe inspiring coastline, historic walled city and ancient harbour as the backdrop - 'a must do'! You will share the experience with all sorts of other craft. I recently visited Croatia and was most inspired by it as a paddling destination (amongst other things).

How About This!
Whilst filling in some time in Split (Croatia) I decided to ferry to Hvar Island which is about two hours away. Who should walk along the promenade towards me but Gail and Colin Priest, well known in paddling circles (Colin has been President of Swan Canoe Club, is an instructor and both he and Gail have been paddling for yonks.). They're on a world trip, mostly backpacking. They said to say hello to everyone! (They're not coming home just yet.) There's a pic <http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe/dubrovpadd07.html>here.

We wish them a safe and fantastic time and look forward to some dramatic white water tales on their return.

The world's best will be there!  In the inaugural race last year our local superstar surf ski paddler Ash Nesbit was 8th in a field dominated by South Africans. Dubai Surf Ski and Kayak Club
Though frequently amazed in my few days in Dubai recently I was most surprised to find they have a quite a large surf ski and kayak club, just along the coast from the 'Al Burj' hotel:  <http://www.dskc.net/>http://www.dskc.net/  and <http://www.dubaipaddlingschool.com/>http://www.dubaipaddlingschool.com/  .

You've all heard of the snow ski slope in the shopping mall there. Well, there is also white water and surf available at the Wild Wadi Water Park!  <%20http://www.wildwadi.com/%20> http://www.wildwadi.com/   .

Australian Surf Ski World Cup

Day One is Rottnest to Hillarys and Day Two course, shorter, still to be announced.
Date changed due to the Dubai Shamaal.

Social Paddle
If you feel like a change to paddling in your local waters come and join a group paddling at Moore River. We put in upstream about 6km from the river mouth, then paddle to Guilderton where there's a cafe/kiosk (yes capuccino is available) for lunch or BYO picnic lunch. There's some interesting scenery along the way. Those wanting more of a workout can paddle upstream from the put-in as well. This is a flatwater paddle, suitable for newish paddlers or those who don't get out in their boats much.

This is the location of the next marathon series race which goes from Guilderton upstream around the second island and return, about 12.5km, but not till December. More details of this later. Join us on the social paddle and check out the course!

Phone me 9386 1737 or email <mailto:rokhor@iinet.net.au>rokhor@iinet.net.au for details if you'd like to join in. It's a full day's outing with travelling.

Moore River Paddling
I have updated <http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe/mooreriv.html>this page on my website with more maps of how to get to put-in places upstream of Guilderton. This is a pleasant paddle for summer, suitable for beginner paddlers and indeed the whole family.  <http://members.iinet.com.au/~rokhor/canoe/moorehire.html>Boat hire is available at Guilderton. If you have your own boat, however, put in at Barragoon Road boat launching site and paddle 6km downstream to Guilderton, so that you have the sea breeze assisting for the return paddle in the afternoon. You can also paddle upstream, often as far as Boobabie Bridge (no public access here) which is another 6km. After winter rains it's a more challenging paddle downstream from Lancelin Road bridge with moving water and obstacles, as far as Boobabie Bridge, after which the river slows down.

Well done!
Local junior K1 paddlers Josh Kippin, Ascot Kayak Club, and Seb Ewing, Swan Canoe Club have been selected for the Slalom National Talent Squad, which will travel to Tasmania in early December to compete in the state championship.
