To All White Water Paddlers!
Help to Preserve Access to the Middle Murray
4th September, 2009,
submissions close to the DEC regarding current and future use of certain areas of the Lane Poole Reserve, Dwellingup.

Of major concern is the possibility plans for Rapids Road - will paddlers have access or not ? This is of particular concern given Alcoa's interests in the area. Can all interested people please pass this info on to all other people that may be interested, and do the following :

- Visit webiste : http://www.dec.wa.gov.au/community-and-education/open-for-public-comment/index.html   .
- Use the link to "Have your say"
- Emphasise the uniqueness, and importance of this section of river to paddlers.
- Emphasise that paddlers by nature are environmentally sensitive and have an interest in preserving the area, and don't need extra facilities.
Rapids Road is extremely important for access.
- and if possible read the draft management plan on the website, and make reference in your submission to pages 102, 102, and map page 149 - these pages refer to areas that can't be used for mining (Calm act Section 5(1) g - "reserve" ) which this area is, safety of users, maps etc.

The more submissions the better....please let them know... only a few days to do this...

Thanks, Craig Wallis, 0413 574 663.

Freya Hoffmeister Nears Perth
Terry Bolland tells us that "Freya will be here in 7 10 days time depending on weather. She has agreed to do a question / answer trip talk when she gets here. Of course we won't know when that will be until she gets closer." So hopefully that evening is a convenient time for most paddling folk. In case you're not aware of who "Freya" is . . . she is a German paddler who is circumnavigating Australia in a sea kayak, repeating the trip made by Paul Caffyn, the only person so far to have accomplished this. Terry has a <http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe/freyatalk.html>flyer with more detail on this event.

New Front Page Pic
<http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe>This beach was voted the best one on a recent paddle by a group of nine Perth paddlers through the Dampier Archipelago. The rocks surrounding this beach were the pale granite which you can see here on one side with the red-black basaltic rock, so typical of the Pilbara, on the other - notice it on the tops of the hills in the background. More pics and story on this magic trip later.

Crossing The Ditch
One of the two paddlers who completed the epic paddle across the Tasman Sea, from Forster, NSW to New Plymouth, New Zealand, James Castrission, has written up the tale of the adventure. Well worth a read.  It's available in bookstores now.

but you will need to let me know . . . We will also be putting on morning tea so you will need to book in for this session."
There will be a one-week break on the 12th September and then back to Katanning Street for training, 7:15am on the 19th.

Murray Marathon Entries Open
The new website for this event is <http://www.murraymarathon.ymca.org.au/Pages/default.aspx>here. The new organisers, YMCA, are only having online entries which close Thursday, 10th December. There's a few other changes as well. The event consists of a 404km paddle from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill, starting on 27th December and finishing on New Year's Eve.

Also on the Murray River . . .
British adventurer, Dave Cornthwaite, will be paddling the length of the Murray River between October and December this year. He's looking for support crew for film making, etc. Go <http://www.thegreatbigpaddle.com/>here to check out details. The following year he will be paddling from UK to Africa, standing up, mostly by the canal-river systems in Europe. Then he plans to paddle the full length of the Amazon River - the three journeys are part of what he calls The Great Big Paddle, over 8,000 miles, which he's using to raise money for East African communities.

Freya Hoffmeister in Perth
A large crowd turned up to hear this amazing paddler's stories of her Australian adventures so far. Now there's just 4,000km to go! All those present were very impressed. It goes without saying we all wish her the best of luck for the remainder of the trip.  Our thanks to Terry and Alaine for organising the evening.
