Stolen - keep your eye out for this one . . .
Either ring the police or contact Pam Riordan 9378 2523 or 0408 909 897 if you think you have spotted this canoe: Red Coleman Ram-X 2 person Canadian canoe. When stolen had the words "HIRE" and the numbers TC1377 on the side. Inside the boat it has "Licensed to carry 2 persons" stencilled on which will be difficult to remove. There are not many of these canoes around.

Blackwood Marathon: Paddlers Take Note - from Marty Wallace
The low wooden bridge
just before the end has changed and it is no longer possible to go under it - you will definitely have to portage. It is now made up of about 6 hollow concrete cubes. They are placed adjacent to each other and the hollow bit is about 0.5 metre across. The water level is about 6 inches from the top of the hollow and is flowing at a fast rate. If you got within about 6 metres the flow would draw you in. It's just around a small corner so if you don't know it's there it could be very dangerous. I assume the organisers will have a rope or something set up there.

Warren River for recreational paddlers
I have added to the website some notes, a map and pictures on the Warren River, near Pemberton- Northcliffe. Despite logs and blackberries, there are some very scenic paddles, though some sections are either too troublesome or outright dangerous. Click on "Where to paddle" <http://members.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe>here. There's also an <http://www.iinet.net.au/~rokhor/canoe/warrivstory.html>amusing story by Tony Henshaw of a paddle on the white water section. The place to stay is Watermark Kilns, dorm style accomodation, conveniently located ( for paddlers, walkers or cyclists), modern and very practical (renovated tobacco drying kilns!). Contact Trevor or Jeanette for details <mailto:hulcup@westnet.com.au>hulcup@westnet.com.au They will help with car shuffles for canoeists and they're experts on the roads in the area!

Catch-up news from Ben Mercer, West Oz paddler
Ben has just moved to Qld to train with AIS for sprint paddling. He has also been selected to be part of the Oz wildwater team:
"I have moved in with Trav Callaghan, Nat, Johnny Locke and Nicole. A full house but cool fun ! The house is right on the canals in Burleigh Waters which is just back from the beach at North Burleigh. For the first week or so I just put my kayak in straight out the front of the house and paddled the 5 mins to Bond Uni 1000m course. I've now got a spot so I can train from the AIS which saves portaging the Bond weir every morning to get there.

Living with some staunch Cottesloe lads I had no choice but to follow their lead and join the North Burleigh SLSC. Training has been great with often 30+ people at training and good competitive camaraderie.

Now that I am settled in a bit more it looks as though the pattern will be 4-5 kayak sessions in the mornings with a couple of those supervised by Brendan Purcell on the course at Bond and the rest with the group of blokes who train at the same time. In the evenings, three weights sessions in the AIS gym and a couple of ski sessions at Nth Burleigh. After those sessions we run a few times a week often around the Burleigh Headland (big bloody hill !) and Tullebudgera Creek. Saturday mornings I have dusted off the goggles and joined in the ironman sessions which ensures I sleep well Saturdays ! We then duck down to the beach over the weekend and grab the boards for some mal surfs. For the past few weeks I have also been doing the board sessions and they are great fun over here in the surf... hard to get sick of just going in and out !"

Stolen Boats Recovered
Police recovered Pam Riordan's Canadian canoe. Another boat stolen earlier in the year has also been located thanks to the watchful eye of one of our kayak manufacturers (his name starts with 'A') who recognised it when asked to make adjustments to it by an unsuspecting purchaser. He had bought it off the guilty party who had 'found' it.
