Rosie's Rapid
Google Earth Co-ordinates: 31°41'06.38"S; 116°07'00.48 "E

Low Water

It's located
about 200 metres below the Brockman's entry into the Avon and 1.6km upstream of Lookout Rapid.
- Photos taken from the river left were at low water, 10.42m @ Walyunga; 10.32m @ Toodyay.
- Those taken from river right were at even lower water, 10.37m @ Walyunga; 10.29m @ Toodyay.

- For comparison, 2012 Avon Descent water level, though low, was 10.47m @ Walyunga; 10.35m @ Toodyay. The rocks were more covered and the current stronger.
- 2010 Avon Descent water level was extremely low, 10.32m @ Walyunga; 10.28m @ Toodyay.

All figures are readings for Day Two of the Descent.

Pics and notes by Robyn Khorshid

1. Entry: River left entry is not obvious here, but is once you are closer. It is available for all water levels. River right is open at higher water levels and with previous experience of this route.

Click on pic for close-up of the river left entry.

2. At this level be prepared for a zig-zag course, looking for paths between rocks, many of which are just below the surface when it is this low. Note the 'Pyramid Rock' towards the end of the rapid. Close-ups of this area are below.

3. Looking upstream at the whole rapid. Note the considerable foreshortening in the photo (due to the distance from the rapid). The low level course is in red, starting from river left and ending up at river right. I have included the other route, though it's not possible at such low water. (River right view)

4. Close-up of top half of rapid to the Pyramid Rock, looking upstream from river right.

5. The rocks at the end of the rapid: 2012 top Avon contenders wrapped their double kayak here, as shown on the Avon Special on TV by Channel 10. The current is powerful, even at low levels. Again, looking upstream from river right.
