Warren River:
Larkin Road Bridge to river mouth

> Warren River Index

Climbing over karri log not far from put-in at Larkin Road.
Afternoon tea stop, lower section of river.

These notes apply to October, 2002

Larkin Road Bridge is more easily accessed from the eastern (Pemberton) side of the river. It is possible on the western side , but check current conditions with the CALM ranger.

Put in is along a track leading upstream on the eastern (Pemberton) side of the bridge

Blackberry fronds protrude over the track in places and you may prefer to leave cars on Larkin Road and carry boats a few hundred metres to the put-in at the end of the track

Generally a flat water paddle - there may be intermittent logs for the first few kilometres, depending on the water level. Portage may be difficult due to blackberry infestation. After good winter rains there will be moving water which may necessitate greater care in approaching logs, but which will make for a faster paddle. It may be preferable to portage around whole sections with many logs - again depends on the water level and the amount of blackberries on the banks.

Starts off with karri forest, then opens out to more open woodland with some farming properties and finally the river cuts its way through sand dunes, mostly vegetated.

Pick up point is at the end of a track which starts near Yeagerup Lake and crosses the Yeagarup Dunes. Definitely 4 WD and an experienced driver. You will need to check with the CALM ranger that this track is passable. The pick-up point is not easily distinguishable from the river, so bear this in mind when organising the trip.

The pick-up point is a four kilometre paddle from the sand spit at the river mouth which is usually open to the sea after winter rains, but blocked with a sandbar during summer. The river turns north-west alongside the sand bar to reach the sea.
Though the sand spit is accessible to fisherfolks' 4WD from the track to the south of the river (see map) the whole area is largely pristine and quite impressive.
