PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: The Princely State was founded in 1728 by a grant of land by the Peshwa to Udaji Rao Puar, a distinguished Maratha soldier, and a descendant of Shambhu Singh alias Sabhu Singh (later Shivaji), a Rajput Noble, who along with his wife had migrated to the Deccan in the 16th Century, and who allegedly was of the Parmar Rajas of Bijolian. During the Pindari raids, the state's territory was gradually reduced in size until it was restored to most of its former holdings in 1819 when it was taken under protection by the British. The title of Viswas Rao ("Faithful") is said to have been conferred on this family by the Maharajas of Satara, as the descendants of Sivaji and the heads of the Mahratta Empire, but it has not been recognised for some years prior to 1893. The Maharaja maintains a military force of 367 cavalry, 1249 infantry, and 5 guns, and is entitled to a salute of 15 guns (in 1893). It became a part of Madhya Bharat on 15th June 1948.
