PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: The Taaleng people were under Haisawadi and its capital was Pegu. The Princes of Taaleng Sahmala and Orimara have jointly worked in disseminating the Marmaja or Mraimacha writing style amongst the people of Haisawadi kingdom. The word ‘Marma’ came from this Marmaja or Mraimacha style. The Marma rulers were recognized in 1796. The first Raja or King was given the Dhamai (Sword) by the British authorities in the 1800's in recognition for their services. The Bangladesh Government still recognizes these Hereditary Kingdoms (under the 1900 Chittagong Hill Tracts Agreement).
