Fijian Social and Chiefly structure is based on the following 'flow chart'. Fiji consists of three confederacies, (Burebasaga, Kabuna and Tovata), which themselves comprise 14 provinces (see below), below the provinces come VANUA (=land), then YAVUSA, then MATAQALI, then TOKATOKA and finally the family, the base unit. The top of this pyramind is summarised graphically below. The title of Tui Viti ("King of Fiji") was used only by Ratu Cakobau 1871/1874. Fiji's HOUSE of CHIEFS has about 70 chiefs in attendance. In 1865 the Confederacy of Independent Kingdoms of Viti (comprising Bau, Bua, Cakaudrove, Lakeba, Macuata, Naduri) was formed, two years later it was split into the Kingdom of Bau and Confederation of Lau  (comprising Bua, Cakaudrove, Lau). The kingdom of Viti was formed in 1871, lasting only to the 10th October 1874, with Ratu Cakobau as the King. Fiji became independent in 1970 and a republic was declared in 1987.
