Prince of the Sa'id
1933/1936, educated at the Royal Military Academy,
Woolwich, England;
as Crown Prince, he held the rank of First Scout of
Egypt; he was
crowned King of Egypt on 29th July 1937; best known
for his corrupt and
ineffectual government, the continued British
occupation, the loss of
much of Palestine to the newly formed State of Israel
in the 1948
Arab-Israeli War, and also for his lavish lifestyle
which ultimately
led to his death; on 23rd July 1952, the Free Officers
Movement staged
a military coup that launched the Egyptian Revolution
of 1952, after
which he was forced to abdicate, and go into exile in
Monaco and Italy,
he was replaced by his infant son; a year later on
18th June 1953, the
revolutionary government formally abolished the
monarchy, ending 150
years of the Muhammad Ali dynasty's rule, and Egypt
was declared a
