HM King FUAD I, Sultan and King of Egypt 1917/1936, born 26th March 1868 in Gizeh Palace, Cairo ^(#2), Sultan of Egypt and Sudan, Sovereign of Nubia, Kordofan, and Darfur [9.10.1917] - [15.3.1922] (as Ahmad Fuad), 1st King of Egypt and Sudan, Sovereign of Nubia, Kordofan, and Darfur [15.3.1922] - [28.4.1936], Rector of Cairo University 1908/1913, President of the Egyptian Geographic Society 1915/1918, he played a major role in the establishment of Cairo University and became its first rector in 1908, resigning five years later; in that same year, he made unsuccessful attempts to secure for himself the throne of Albania, which had obtained its independence from the Ottoman Empire a year earlier; in the aftermath of the Egyptian revolution of 1919, the United Kingdom ended its protectorate over Egypt, and recognised it as a sovereign state on 28th February 1922, two weeks later, on 15th March 1922, he issued a decree changing his title from Sultan to King,

Abdu'r Rahim Sabry Pasha (Minister of Agriculture and Governor of Cairo), and his wife, Tewfika Hanim Sharif; Sultana of Egypt [26.5.1919] - [15.3.1922], Queen Consort of Egypt [15.3.1922] - [28.4.1936], educated at Mere de Dieu School, Cairo and the Dame de Sion School, Alexandria; though confined to the palace through most her husband's reign, she was allowed to attend opera performances, flower shows, and other ladies-only cultural events, she was present at the opening ceremony of the parliament in 1924, later she accompanied the King during part of his four-month tour of Europe in 1927; after her husband's death, she settled in the United States where she converted to the Roman Catholic faith under the name of Mary Elizabeth and in consequence was deprived of her rights and titles on 1st August 1950; and had issue. He died 28th April 1936 in the Koubbeh Palace in Cairo and was buried in the Al Rifa'i Mosque in Cairo.
