PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: Originally the area was ruled by the Sultan of Malacca, and after his defeat by the Portuguese, it was ruled by the Sultanate of Johor, however, Johor was having trouble with the Dutch powers, and the Sultan decided to allow the area to find a ruler on their own. Sometime before 1770, a council of leaders known as the datuk-datuk penghulu luak left for Pagar Ruyung in Minangkabau in search of a leader. The Raja of Pagar Ruyung (Sultan Abdul Jalil), gave them a leader in the form of his son or near relative, Raja Mahmud, better known as Raja Melewar when he became the 1st Yang di-Pertuan of Negeri Sembilan in 1773. This process was repeated when Raja Melewar died in 1795, and again in 1808, the council of leaders once more left for Minangkanau, and the Raja of Pagar Ruyong gave yet another one of his sons. Negeri Sembilan was reduced and renamed Sri Menanti in 1876, though it was later re-established in 1897 as Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus when the Federated Malay States (FMS) was established. Negeri Sembilan endured Japanese occupation in World War II between 1941 and 1945, and joined the Federation of Malaya in 1948, and became a state of Malaysia in 1963. It is a Constitutional elective monarchy, and the ruler is selected by a council comprising four Princes (Putera Yang Empat) of the state, namely the Undangs of Sungai Ujong, Jelebu, Johol and Rembau. The official constitutional title of the Ruler of the state is Duli Yang Maha Mulia (DYMM) Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan and he holds office for life. Rulers were...
