Dear subscriber, The request from Steven A. Brown for subscription to the distribution list CHINA has been received. Please read the following description of the function of this distribution list and the guidelines for participation. To confirm that you wish to participate in this list and are willing to do so under the guidelines, please send a confirmation of your request for subscription to the editors, Tom Nimick and David Wright, at email address Q4356@PUCC (BITNET) or q4356@pucc.Princeton.EDU (Internet). Distribution list CHINA is intended for discussion of all aspects of the academic disciplines that are included in what is commonly called Chinese Studies. This includes, but is not limited to, anthropology, art history, economics, history, linguistics, literature, politics, religion, and sociology. Contributions and questions are welcomed from both specialists and non-specialists. The role of the editors will be limited to overseeing the guidelines described below and will not involve changing either the style or argumentation of the submissions. Discussions of the editorial policy are welcomed on the list. GUIDELINES As this list is for discussion of academic issues, submissions should not be concerned with urging political action. It is assumed that the readers of the list have access to the news media and to the other forums that discuss current affairs. Therefore news announcements should not be submitted to the list. However, analysis of current events as part of an academic discussion is legitimate. The editors will return an inappropriate submission to the sender and will make an effort to indicate why it was returned and to let them know of alternate forums in which they may wish to express their opinions. Within the academic community, personal attacks are not an appropriate part of debate. While individual intellectual commitments, as expressed in published materials, may be part of the academic debate the editors will return to the sender any submissions that include a personal attack even if the submission is of interest to the larger audience. Should the sender remove the offending portions of the submission, it may then be resubmitted for distribution to the list. Any questions about these guidelines may be sent to the editors at Q4356@PUCC (BITNET) or q4356@pucc.Princeton.EDU (Internet). The Editors
