Review

The more I listen to the score to Stargate the more I like it. This was David Arnold's first major score and he followed it up with the score to the awful movie Independence Day. The score to Stargate is huge, much like the film itself. A big orchestra playing big music. There is nothing more enjoyable than listening to music which is being backed up by a large orchestra. The score reminds me a little of Star Wars, more in the feel rather than the content. There are a number of great melodies at work here, and the Stargate theme itself is great. The score is exotic it most parts, and a little sinister in others.

The television series based on the movie -- Stargate SG-1 -- uses a lot of the same melodies I mentioned earlier from the movie. In fact the score is half credited to Arnold, as most of the music seemed to have come from the movie, with Joel Goldsmith filling in the rest. In fact Goldsmith seems to have selected all the best bits from the movie for the pilot episode and it turns out that Stargate SG-1 is just as enjoyable as the original.

Most of the tracks are short, though there is a longish one on Stargate SG-1. In the end you get over an hour of music with Stargate and just over fifty minutes with Stargate SG-1.Thus I would suggest using the tracks for specific descriptions and events, though a lot of it would be great for action sequences as well. The score could work just as well as in a Fantasy or Science Fiction setting, as though the movie was Science Fiction the setting could have easily been Fantasy if not for Ra and his friends.

Two great scores that are both highly recommended.
