Shock and Awe of the Universe

About 5 billion years ago, in the Milky Way Galaxy, a cloud of dust and gas, fuelled by an explosion, began to spin furiously so that the heavier particles collapsed in toward the centre.  Our Sun, a flaming ball of gas, was born. Around it, huge chunks of matter collected together to become the planets and moons of our solar system.  Earth is 13,000 km in diameter and 150 million km away from the Sun, just right for Life on Earth to flourish.  Black clouds above the fledgling Earth dropped water into huge pits and troughs, the seas and lakes.  Sunlight powered microscopic beings in the waterways to consume materials flowing into the seas, from rocks eroded by rain and wind.  A lack of replenishment of food depleted these early heterotrophs.  However, some of the primordial beings, autotrophs, acquired the ability to break down water and combine it with carbon dioxide and other elements, using the energy of sunlight, to produce their own food.  Oxygen was a waste product, and bubbled up out of the seas into the atmosphere, to react with methane and ammonium, forming mainly oxygen and nitrogen, with traces of carbon dioxide, water vapour and inert noble gases.

As oxygen built up, the heterotrophs re-emerged, by consuming the autotrophs, and combining to form single celled organisms, in acts of symbiosis, or mutual help.  Uni-cellular beings joined together to form multi-cellular organisms, with their different types of cells having specialised functions.  Some of these organisms mutated in order to use oxygen to transport nutrients or building materials within their bodily systems.  Their internal chemical reactions led to carbon dioxide being released as a waste product, which in turn, helped the autotrophs.  The delicate balance as we know it today, had been born through the co-operative interactions of these “unemotional” beings.

Evolution or development of our Galaxy may still be continuing, as Earth rotates around the Sun, the Moon orbits Earth, and the whole solar system orbits the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy, as the Milky Way travels through the universe at the speed of 600 km per second.  The shock and awe of the universe is something we should humble ourselves to.  We should not take either our home, planet Earth, or Life for granted.  They have been created from an amazing interplay of forces.  Let us sincerely hope that humankind, the supposed apex of Life, will truly look after our one home, Earth.
