Messianic Prophecies of the Old Testament[Home] [Site map] [Updates] [Projects] [Other sites: Compelling predictions; Clarifying Christianity; Hope of Israel; J. Hampton Keathley; A Quick Look ...; Rick Reinckens]
This is still a work-in-progress. I have completed my compilation of verses on messianic prophecies that I have meditated on in my morning `quiet time.' I now am going to group them under topics, and/or add my comments to them. The Bible version is the New International Version (NIV) unless otherwise indicated.
Jesus taught that He had come to fulfill the Old Testament Law and the Prophets (Mt 5:17). That the prophets had written about Him, including His betrayal (Mt 26:24; Jn 13:18 = Ps 41:9; 55:12-14
).56But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled." (Mt 26:56); "31Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him, spit on him, flog him and kill him. 33On the third day he will rise again.'" (Lk 18:31-33); "He said to them, `This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms'" (Lk 24:44)
That the prophets had written about Jesus, including His betrayal (Acts 1:16
).
"25He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" 27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself (Lk 24:25-27); "Philip found Nathanael and told him, `We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote-Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.'" (Jn 1:45); "39You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, ... 46If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me." (Jn 5:39,46); "18But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Christ would suffer. 19Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you-even Jesus. 21He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. 22For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.' [Dt 18:15-18] "24"Indeed, all the prophets from Samuel on, as many as have spoken, have foretold these days . 25And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, 'Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.' [Gn 12:3; 22:18; 26:4; 28:14] 26When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways." (Acts 3:18-26; "24When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: " 'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 26The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.'" (Acts 4:24-26; Ps 2:1-2; 30Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isa the prophet . "Do you understand what you are reading?" Philip asked. 31"How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: "He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth .33In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth ." 34The eunuch asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?" 35Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. [Isa 53:7-8] (Acts 8:30-34; "All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." (Acts 10:43; "The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath." (Acts 13:27).
Job 9:32-34: 32"He is not a man like me that I might answer him, that we might confront each other in court. 33If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both,34someone to remove God's rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. [1 Sam 2:25; 1 Tim 2:5]
Isa 53:5: But he was pierced for our transgressions [Ps 22:16; Zec 12:10; Jn 19:34], he was crushed for our iniquities [Mt 26:37-38; Lk 22:44]; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him [2 Cor 5:21; Gal 3:13], and by his wounds we are healed . [1 Pet 2:24]
