  1. Plants in the Bible
  2. Origin of Plants

  1. Plants in the Bible
  2. Identifying plants named in the Bible, especially the Old Testament is difficult (Myers, 1996, p.837). Many uncertainties remain and for some Bible plants no sure identification is ever likely to be made (Myers, 1996, p.837). Plants in the Bible are not necessarily the same as those with the same name today, since the ecology in Bible lands has since changed (Myers, 1996, p.837; Harrison, 1962, p.1003). Also plants found in Palestine today are not necessarily the same as those in Biblical times (Harrison, 1962, p.1003). The Biblical writers were not concerned with modern standards of scientific accuracy (Harrison, 1962, p.1003; Myers, 1996, p.837). Plants were not distinguished by people in Biblical times as modern botanists do, but were classified according to their environment or function, in general groups rather than as individual species (Myers, 1996, p.837). Therefore the same plant could have a different name in different times and environments (Myers, 1996, p.837). However, modern translations of the Bible have made use of improved identifications of many plants named in the Bible (Myers, 1996, p.837).

  3. Origin of Plants
  4. The first fossil record appearance of land plants was about 475 million years ago, although genetic analsysis suggests land plants may have first appeared about 700 million years ago (Wellman, Osterloff & Mohiuddin, 2003; Noble, 2003). [top]
