3S-GTE RWD Engine mount construction guide

The following documentation will hopefully explain the process I used to make engine mounts to fit a Gen 3 3S-GTE into a TA22 Toyota Celica. This same process could be used to help fit any generation 3S-GE/GTE into a TA22 or any RWD car for that matter. Now as they say, there's more than one way to skin a cat. This is just the process I chose as I believe it is the easiest and most cost effective solution.

Parts required:

First i'll start with the most difficult part of the job. The inlet side of the engine.
If you don't already know, the inlet side of the 3S-GTE engine block has had a rib removed to allow fitment of the transfer case. This rib normally houses two threaded fixing points for the engine mount when the S series block is being used in RWD formation. For this reason I had to come up with another way of securely fixing the engine mount to the block

Inlet side engine mount adaptor plate

Because two of the fixing points on the inlet side of the engine block have been ground away, I made a plate that would allow me to use a standard RWD S series engine mount. The pictures below show the plate that will allow me to use the four points circled red in the picture above. You can also see that the plate as been bent/shaped to fit to the fixing points of the block.

You must make sure the adaptor plate is shaped so that the bottom left corner is spaced away from the block which still allows the gearbox/engine support bracket to be used(see pictures below). Also note that only one bolt can be used to hold the gearbox/engine support bracket to the block.

In the picture below you can see 2 nuts that's have been welded to the back side of the plate, these are to take place of the two mount points that are missing on the block. The small plate between the 2 nuts are just to help prevent the nuts from wanting to turn and brake the weld.

Inlet side engine mount

The pictures below are of the engine mount I made for the inlet side of the 3S-GTE. I constructed the engine mount by welding half of a exhaust side 2T mount and half of a inlet side 2S mount together(Please note: Inlet and exhaust side 2S engine mounts are different. Mixing these up will waste you a lot of time). The half that bolts to the adaptor plate on the engine is 2S, the other half is 2T. This will allow the engine to bolt to the factory TA22 cross member. I chose to use half of the 2T exhaust side mount because its longer than the exhaust side and gives more meat to weld to.

The pictures below show the engine mount bolted to the adaptor plate by two bolts on the left. The two bolt holes on the right allow the mount and adaptor plate to be bolted to the block which can also be seen in the picture below.

Exhaust side engine mount

Construction of the exhaust side engine mount is exactly the same as the inlet side except its a hell of a lot easier. This is due to the fact that all the fixing points are all still available on the engine block. The mount is constructed by welding half of a exhaust side 2T mount and half of a exhaust side 2S mount together, and that's it(Please note: Inlet and exhaust side 2S engine mounts are different. Mixing these up will waste you a lot of time). Also note the dipstick hole in the block is located behind the new mount. I blocked this off and relocated the dipstick to the sump, but that's a different story.
