Return to Irenes Home PageBorn in the U K I have lived in Perth ,Western Australia since 1977, previously having lived in Johannesburg, South Africa for 10 years. Perth is a beautiful city on theWestern side of the Australian continent, perched on the Indian Ocean the typical sun,and surf lifestyle of Australia.I initially studied ceramics as a part time student, for 6 years, at Carine College of T A F E,a local Technical college. This led me on to university and gaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree ( visual Arts) majoring in Ceramics at Edith Cowan University here In Perth, Western Australia. I also studied glaze technology for a year at Perth Technical College.
The pieces I create are all hand coiled, as I do not use the wheel at all. This can be a painstaking business as I tend to build large pieces, sometime even life size!! Which I make in sections and after firing they are fitted together. This is also convenient for transporting them. Although I mostly Raku my work, some pieces have a slipglaze finish, and are fired in my 8 cu ft. gas fired kiln. Working in one off pieces, I still work in series, and often after a break will return to a previous style and method. This helps to keep the work fresh.
My small studio is behind my home, with a glimpse of ocean through some trees. I sometimes give workshops from here but mostly I work alone. Although Perth is a very isolated city, the art and ceramics community is very much alive and doing very well.
In December 2003 I was priviledged to be included as one of only a handful of Australian artists to be in the Biennale Internazionale Dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy.
