Japanese Drumming

Murasaki Daiko is a Melbourne based female drumming group which plays traditional and contemporary Japanese Taiko (drum) music.

The group is inspired by the passion and energy of Taiko drumming groups in Japan and was formed in 1994 when three members came together by chance in Melbourne and discovered their mutual addiction to the Taiko rhythms. Some of the members have played with groups in Japan, and some have begun here in Australia.

The group has been spicing up events all over Victoria and beyond with their unique blend of enthusiasm and rhythm for over 10 years, from the City of Melbourne’s Millennium Celebrations, Moomba and the Apollo Bay Music Festival, to community festivals, weddings, gallery openings and martial arts tournaments.

They celebrated their 100th performance in January, 2004 and look forward to the next 100!
