Jasmine's Bellydance History
I have been involved with bellydancing for 14 years and have performed as
a troupe member and also as a soloist. My first 4 years with the dance
were spent in very intensive training in all aspects of performance and
stagecraft before I ventured into solo work while still keeping a very
busy troupe schedule. As I have always been interested in the theatrical
side of bellydance I have tended to be drawn to the cabaret style of
dance rather than the folkloric.
Living in Western Australia has made studying more of a challenge
as we are quite
isolated but I have been fortunate to be able to attend classes and
workshops with some very talented Australian and International teachers.
My thanks go to all of them. Some of these have people been:
Amaya (U.S.A)
Ibrahim Farrah (U.S.A)
Teretzka (Turkey)
Belyssa (Australia)
Judith Lees (Australia)
Keti (Australia)
I have enjoyed teaching the dance to many students myself and find it creates a
special bond between teacher and student which is part of the joy of the
dance.
My love of bellydance started with the first few minutes of my first
class. I was totally captivated with the music and freedom of
expression that is available. It was very obvious that here was a way
for me to develop and express talents that had previously remained
hidden. I have tried to base my style on the very elegant dancers of the
1940's and 50,s borrowing from their movie star glamour and poise.
I have been fortunate to have been asked to perform at many concerts and
staged events where my only instructions have been "come up with something
different". This gives me the interesting challenge of creating a piece of
theatre while remaining true to the style of dance I have chosen.
I am currently putting together new routines that will be a tribute
to the influence of stars like Tahia Carioca, The Gamal Twins,
Sohair Zaki, and Nadia Gamal.
Some highlights of my career have been:
Flames of Araby dancer of the year
Invited performer at the GMH Adelaide Grand Prix Ball
Special guest appearances at the Belyssa Academy of Dance Orientalle gala
award presentation nights.
Invited performer at the Ibrahim Farrah end of Workshop ball
