28 DECEMBER 2007

Papertrail return from their ‘In My Veins’ Tour of the Wheatbelt and just to give everyone a taste of the experience, here’s a day by day tour blog from bass player and tour manager Paul Speering:

TOUR BLOG - DAY 1

NORTHAM, WA

Well, what a great start to our "In My Veins" Tour of The Wheatbelt! The drive from my house to Northam was uneventful (which is a good thing) and we lobbed into town with plenty of time to set up for our opening show of the tour at the Northam Swimming Pool.

I don't have any pics from the pool show on my camera, so I'll have to wait for those who did take some photos to send them through to me so I can stick 'em on here! We played to 100+ kids and adults running around, splashing in the pool, jumping of the diving board, playing gladiators in the kiddie's pool, and apparently, we had a pretty decent sound! We got some great feedback, and we hopefully made our mark on more than a few people. We even got a visit from Father Christmas :P

Then on to the Avon Bridge Hotel, just down the road from the pool…. After a great opening set by The Residents, we jumped up on 'stage' (well a corner of the beer garden anyway :P) at about 10pm. After blowing away some cobwebs we really hit our stride, and had quite an appreciative crowd on hand to hear our music. There was even one excited young lady who came up and licked Luis' face during our second set!

So, all in all, the first day on tour was a pretty good one. I'm sitting in the Cummins Theatre as I type this up, going through various sound checks and sorting things out. It's great to be able to have some time to really get things sounding awesome, as opposed to most of our gigs where we only get a simple 'line' check to make sure things are actually working!

I'll write some more up later on tonight when I get some time, and for all those people in Merredin, we want to see as many of you guys down at Cummins Theatre as possible tonight! Doors open, and the support act starts at 8pm

TOUR BLOG – DAY 2

MERREDIN, WA

This is what I wrote after we finished at the Cummins Theatre in Merredin, but I didn't have internet access, so I haven't been able to put it up until now:

--------------------------------------

I'm sitting in the Olympic Motel in Merredin at 2 am on Sunday morning, feeling slightly disappointed on the one hand, but, on the other, happy that those who did make the effort to come on down had a great time. We certainly had a great time playing, and we came off stage pretty knackered at the end of the show.

It wasn't until after I'd made all the bookings, and put everything in motion that I found out that there was a combined 21st and 18th party, happening on the same night as our show, about 500m down the road from the Cummins Theatre where we were playing. So, unfortunately, that had an effect on the size of the crowd that came down.

We ended up with a smaller than expected crowd, but a crowd that was prepared to get up and dance, and that gave us something to work with. So, we played for those guys who made the effort, like they were the most important people on the earth… we really appreciate the dancing ;-) We even signed a bunch of CDs for those who bought one, so that when we get famous, they can sell them on EBay!!!

Now, I'm gonna take a step back a few hours, to when we were setting up. It was great to have some time to really properly set up our gear, and have a PROPER sound check, and get things really sounding awesome. When we play in Perth or Freo, we never have the opportunity to do that, it's always "Get your gear on and off as quick as possible" and that's fair enough, I understand why, but it really is a great benefit to have a few hours to get things sorted out. We rocked up at the theatre in the early afternoon, and after half an hour of unloading and setting our gear up, the real business of getting things to sound nice in the kick arse Cummins Theatre started.

We decided to go real old school with the microphones, so that we could run two separate systems, one for front of house, and the other for monitoring. It was quite an experience having to sing into two mics at once, and it gave me twice as many things to break! It ended up working fantastically well, and we ended up with a great sound on stage for us to listen to, and a great sound through the front of house for the crowd to listen to.

After we'd spent a good couple of hours getting all that set up, we headed down to The Toy Kingdom at 4pm for our little acoustic in store show. Petro and I (Speero) sat back in the comfy couches and played completely unamplified to a small but appreciative crowd. Initially, it was actually quite confronting not having a mic stand to hide behind, but by the end, we felt quite liberated by the experience. One thing we learnt from that exercise was that country towns all go to sleep at about 1.30pm! We would have had heaps more people if we'd started at 1pm instead of 4… but, it's all a learning experience.

The Cummins Theatre is a superb venue to play at, and I would highly recommend it to any band that is considering touring out that way. Give me a buzz if you're interested, and I can pass on the relevant information. We'd like to thank Jane Bandurski for making the venue available to us, and for putting in such a huge effort. Paul Bandurski did a great job on the mixing desk and made sure that we sounded good without causing any hearing loss, and we'd finally like to thank Casey, Laura, Heather, and the rest for being ballsy enough to jump up for a dance! You really made the night special for us!

Tomorrow's a big day for us, with a 3 hour drive and then a Sunday session at The Corny Hotel in Narrogin. It's been a long but rewarding trip so far, and I've got plenty of stories to tell you all when I get back!

Take it easy, and enjoy the holiday season!

Cheers,

Speero

TOUR BLOG – DAY 3

NARROGIN, WA

Well, after having a few days to let the tour sink in, and using the Christmas break to recover from the tour, I think I can safely say that the final night of the tour in Narrogin was the best night I've ever had being part of a band.

The Corny was packed, the weather was warm, the barbies were cooking up a storm, the vibe was awesome, and the audience were great! It was the perfect way to wind up the tour, and by the end of our second set, you couldn't wipe the smiles off our faces. It was just one of those feelings that is so hard to describe. What made it even better was sitting down after it was all over, and enjoying a few drinks (non-alcoholic for me) with some pretty cool people. We even got invited back on a rotation system every 2-3 months because of the crowd that came down to see us, so that just topped it off nicely.

The owners of the pub, Kerry and Trev, and their 3 kids are just about the nicest people you are ever likely to meet and they made our time there highly, highly enjoyable.

After driving for a few hours from Merredin, we arrived in Narrogin in time to have a bit of a nap, and set up well in time for the show later that night. I even got a warning flash from a passing police car, so I guess the gods were shining on us this day! It was one of our aims to not be rushed driving while we were on tour, and I think we managed that quite well. We always made it to the venues in plenty of time, and could stick the cruise control right on the speed limit.

Upon reflection, we've achieved something pretty decent with this tour. Not only were we able to do this tour without being out of pocket, but we have ensured future shows for the band in all three towns we visited, and possibly others through our networking after each show; we have established links with the very important local regional newspapers and radio stations; we have made friends and fans in each town; we have taken Papertrail's music out of the metro area, and have taken original music into cover band territory, and come back unscathed. Only once did someone yell out "Play some accadacca" and he was politely told to shut up by the friendly security staff.

It has been a huge learning experience for us as a band, and as individuals, and we have come out off it much better as a band and as individuals. For myself, it has been a heap of work to get this thing happening, as 'tour manager', and I'm pretty happy with how it all went. Obviously, not everything went perfectly, but it wouldn't be much of a challenge if that happened, now would it! And it wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the other guys in the band, and all the help we had along the way. It's been greatly appreciated.

By the time I got home just after lunch on Christmas Eve, I was pretty knackered, but in a good kind of way... I'm sure you know what I mean. It had been a huge build-up, and in some ways I was glad it was over, but in other ways I wish it could have gone on forever. But all good things must come to an end sometime, if only to give us a taste of what we can achieve when we want to.

As for what Papertrail is up to next, well, we have a gig at The Railway Hotel in Freo on Friday the 4th of Jan, and then we'll start working on our next recording. And I'm sure that there'll be another tour in the pipeline in the near future as well, well, if I have anything to do with it. But, as I always say, you've got to work to make your own luck, and you have to work hard to be in a position to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way, so who knows what the future may bring!

Thank you all for sharing this journey with us, and I have thoroughly enjoyed putting my thoughts down for you all to read on behalf of Papertrail. I hope you've enjoyed reading about the goings on of Papertrail on tour, and maybe next time we'll be regaling you with stories from some more exotic locations!

Until next time, take care, and take it easy!

Speero

PS: Once we finish filtering through some 300+ photos, we'll put some up here for you all to enjoy!

After having spent a few hours in the studio, Papertrail’s new songs are ready to be mixed. From what we have heard so far, these new live favourites are going to sound pretty damn good!

6 MARCH 2007

Thanks to everyone who came down on Saturday night to help celebrate our debut EP launch! You really made the night enjoyable. We had a great time up on stage, and I hope I didn’t injure anyone when I was throwing stuff out into the crowd! Thanks to all our old fans, new fans and people who hadn’t seen us before for turning up. It was great seeing so many faces out there in the crowd. We really hope you enjoyed the show, and enjoy the EP.

We'd also like to thank the other bands Love You Not, Good Little Fox, Chelsea Lights and Spoonful for helping us celebrate this launch. It takes a lot of the stress out of doing something like this when the people you deal with are, well, easy to deal with! Also, have to mention the sponsors, RTRFM and Healthway, with their Drug Aware message, under the banner of the Fresh Blast Program.

Now, the EPs will be on sale in all the usual outlets from this week, but, you’ll be able to buy them off us direct a little bit cheaper. We’ll be setting that up very shortly. When we have it all sorted, we'll give you the info. If you're interested in buying one of the EPs off us for $5, give us a hoy, and I'll set one aside for you! We will be playing more and more shows over the coming weeks and months, and of course, we'll let you all know the details when when they are confirmed.

Thanks once again for your support, and we hope to see you all at our upcoming shows!!

Cheers,

Speero

See www.triplejunearthed.com/Papertrail for details.

4 AUGUST 2006

Thank you to all the people who came down on Saturday night. There was a great crowd in attendance to witness a stunning show from the Dave Mann Collective. Heaps of money was raised, and there was just such a great vibe. We'd also like to thank the bands and artists for giving up their time for this charity event, The Dave Mann Collective, The Dead Trees and Freya Hanly. It was an absolute honour to share the stage with such fine musicians and such fine human beings. T’was a good night indeed.

If you would like to be kept in the loop about our upcoming shows, make sure you sign up for our mailing list. We personally control the list, so you wont get any spam. And feel free to drop into our forum to give us some feedback, or just to say hello.

28 JUNE 2006

Hi everyone! We’ve returned from our Dunsborough Band Camp refreshed, relaxed and with plenty of new songs and dirty secrets to slot into our setlist, not to mention all the photographic evidence we need to blackmail our rhythm section in the future!! Moving right along, this Friday night, the 30th of June at the Swan Basement in North Fremantle, Papertrail will be helping to celebrate the 21st Birthday of our good friend Rohan. It’s a stellar line-up for this night with last year’s Next Big Thing winner The Fault headlining. Be there!!!!

30 MAY 2006

This Friday night, the 2nd of June, the first instalment of two Mission Burma Fundraising Shows will take place at The Swan Basement in North Fremantle. The lineup is headlined by Superengine, with support from Papertrail, Freya Hanly and Joanney Truscheit, and Khin Myint. Doors open at 8.30pm, with entry $8.

The funds raised will go to a group of five volunteers from Perth, who will fly to Burma in November to build a school and raise the education standards of orphaned refugees on the Thai-Burmese border. The group called ‘Mission Burma’ are a non political, non religious volunteer group, who have all funded the project themselves so far. All funds raised will go straight to the people as there is no middle man to take their cut for administration costs.

MP3s of our very first radio interview on 27 May @ RTR FM … COMING SOON!!!

25 MAY 2006

Yep, you heard right. Papertrail will be on the radio this weekend. We will be interviewed this Saturday afternoon around 2.30pm on RTR FM (during Homegrown), which is 92.1 on your dials. If you listen carefully, you may even hear some of our songs. Make sure you tune in!!!

28 APRIL 2006

On the 14th of May 2006, at the Swan Basement in Fremantle, Papertrail will be headlining a very special gig. We have something under our hats, but you’re just going to have to come along to find out what it is!!! Our good friends, Eve’s Arrival, Crashpod and Code will be helping us celebrate Petro’s birthday, Papertrail’s 1st Year Anniversary, and the surprise we have in store!!!

Papertrail will be taking an active part in the birth of a new live original music venue at the Coolbellup Hotel. Starting on Saturday the 20th of May, Papertrail will be playing regularly at Perth’s Newest Original Music Venue.

Papertrail are also taking an active part in two upcoming charity gigs, on the 2nd of June and the 29th of July. These two nights will provide much needed money for the charity organisation ‘Mission Burma,’ to help provide much needed education and medical aid to Burmese orphans.

3 APRIL 2006

Hi Everyone! Papertrail have just finished their first foray in a recording studio proper and can't wait to hear the results later this year. A big thanks to Ollie and the students at SAE College for the opportunity. Other than that we've got some new songs to rehearse and a few gigs lined up, including a gig at the Hydey and a couple at the Swan Basement.

3 MARCH 2006

Well, after gigs-a-plenty to start the first 2 months of the year, Papertrail have hit the studio thanks to the students of SAE College in East Perth. We’re recording 2 new songs called “Coming Home” and “Born” which will take Monday and Wednesday nights for the next 3 weeks. Clive has done a great job with laying down the drums for the tracks and the results are liking very promising.

30 JANUARY 2006

Hi Folks! We had a great time playing at the second instalment of the Cockburn Community Concert series for this summer. A cast of thousands turned out on Saturday night to be entertained by Papertrail, Eve’s Arrival and Peace, Love and All That Stuff! We also gave away some demo CDs and were called on for autographs later in the night!

20 JANUARY 2006

Just want to say a huge thanks to the Cockburn Council and all the folk that came down to support us for the Cockburn Battle of the Bands last Sunday. We came second in the overall judge's award and first in the audience award winning some pretty cool prizes including recording time!!

10 JANUARY 2006

Papertrail are kicking off the new year with a rash of shows spanning the metro area, including a couple of Battle of the Band performances. Get those sneakers on!!

26 NOVEMBER 2005

Hi Folks. Welcome to the revamped Papertrail website (the old one suffered from a lack of updates and a lack of colour too). Have been getting back into the swing of rehearsals again for our last show for the year and a worthy cause – Burma Fundraiser, Dec 3 @ The Kitchen (Leederville) – hope to see plenty of people there.

10 OCTOBER 2005

Another gig down at the swan basement – we had a great time with our pals the Verites and Eddie Lovejoy. It was a last minute slot for us, but pulled it off and all parties had a great time. So after a couple of confidence building gigs at the Swan, with some great advice and feedback from punters, peers, friends and family, Papertrail will be rehearsing like there’s no tomorrow for upcoming shows.

We are also progressing well with the mixing of a few demo songs in a bid to put together a glorious demo CD (something to show the grandkids).

Finally, the elusive keyboard role will be filled inhouse (Paul has finally starting to practice on the old Casio again and Jason will play parts where necessary).

20 AUGUST 2005

Well, after recently recording and submitting songs to the 2005 WAM song of the year contest (checkout the music page to hear them), we are currently busy rehearsing and revamping our setlist for upcoming performances.

3 JULY 2005

Welcome everyone! We finally have our website up and running (it wasn’t quite as arduous as it first seemed) so feel free to roam around …
