Murray is the son of Alec Ambrose STENNING and Doris Levenia GRIGG. He was born 2 April 1938, at Woodside Hospital, Fremantle, Western Australia. He was a school teacher for a few years, then studied accounting, qualifying as a cost accountant. After a few years working in the building industry, Murray joined the Shell Company in Perth, and was very much at home, following his father's footsteps. Murray married Ann Rosine JACKA on 1 March 1968. Ann is the daughter of William Kenneth JACKA and Eileen O'KEEFFE. she was born 3 April 1937 almost one year older than her husband. Shortly after they were married, Murray and Ann lived in Booragoon, then a very new suburb, but only a few minutes from the city of Perth.

Ann and Murray's first daughter, Debra Ann, arrived on 1 August 1969 and only 10 months later the Shell Company transferred the family to Melbourne. They lived at 39 Koolkuna Avenue, Doncaster, Victoria and on 6 September 1971, a second daughter, Linda Jane, arrived. The family stayed in  Doncaster, until the girls became teenagers. In 1985, Murray left the Shell Company after almost twenty years and went into his own business using computers for small business accounting as a bureau service. They lived for some years in  9 Azure Court, Templestowe before Murray and Ann decided to retire to Busselton, Western Australia in 1991. A few years later Debra also moved to Busselton and in October 2000 Linda also moved to Western Australia and is working in Perth.
