TARMAC NEWS JANUARY 2007

Trevor’s public spirited sundowner, which was held on the 4th day of Summer at Whiteman, was a great success.  It was also the first working day of the dreaded “daylight saving”. This probably doesn’t mean much to the average bod, but for me it meant that I got home at 7.30 p.m. in broad daylight, after several hours of pleasant flying and a very sociable B.B.Q.

The fact that my 25 year old Burford “Wombat” bit the dust for keeps is a secondary consideration because the big diesel is at long last showing signs of becoming a good engine.

Numerous models flew, despite a brisk breeze, and for added entertainment we had a silky terrier who was determined to attack and destroy every kangaroo in sight!  Well, he tried!

Without detracting from other models, Bob Fry’s little “MIDGE” speed job deserves a mention.  “Pocket Rocket” just about sums it up.

I am pretty sure that a repeat of this shindig in the New Year would go down well, even if we all pay for services rendered.

Fred Tower gave us a fright recently by coming down with an ailment which had all sorts of Doctors running around the place.  I guess it boils down to erratic behaviour in the timing department.  Happily all is getting back to normal now and we will be seeing Fred for quite a while to come.

This may not be news to some people, but we have been told that Aero Flyte has gone out of business. Cheap imports have forced the local business to close.  A big hole will be left where C23 and Dope used to be. Let’s hope someone can resurrect these products.

Chas Stone sent this photo of a new FOX .60 stunt engine.  Not quite released for general sale at this time, it looks like a handful of pure unadulterated power!

The TARMAC Xmas BBQ went off very well with most of those present seeing stars at some time during the evening.  This was because our honoured guest, Noel Mitchell, set up one of his telescopes so that everyone and anyone could do a bit of stargazing.  Very interesting!  Our thanks to

Mitch.

McNAUGHT COMET

What a fabulous sight this was!  We were very lucky to get super vision of the comet from our backyard.  Makes you feel quite humble when you consider the vastness of the Universe.  Of course it was travelling very slowly, only 100 kms per second.

Don't forget, any articles for the next issue must be received forthwith otherwise the typist quits.
