TARMAC NOTES

SEPTEMBER, 2007.

Remember the drama a while back when a crazed magpie caused Jim Trevaskis’ ”Flite Streak” to self destruct?

Well, you would think that the odds about it happening again would be fairly astronomical, but with minor variations it did just that.

It happened to Kevin Cook at Lumen Christi and the offending bird was not a magpie but a pink and grey galah, one of a group who were having a picnic at the Eastern end of the field.   There were about a dozen or so of these flying bombs in the gaggle, but it took only one to hit the lines and cause Kevin’s Sig “Mustang” to crash and do a fair amount of damage.

“Such is Life!” (who said that?)

Thanks to Charlie Stone for retyping the captions to the following photos.

The originals just could not be enlarged to readable size.  We tried! and tried! and tried! and tried!!

The originals were sent from Fred Tower who drew our attention to the fact that the Championships mentioned here could well be the first official State Champs in W.A., the year being 1949.  This means that the photos you are now looking at, first saw the light of Day 58 years ago.  I was sweet sixteen!  Yes, I was young once too, all you snotty nosed teenagers!

Another blast from the past.

All but one are identified.  Who is that cutie on the left!

Sorry the print isn’t so hot but the best we could do!  The one on the Right looks like Yosemite Sam.

Circ 1950:    Top to Bottom -

George Papas at Pinjar with Carl Goldberg " Cumulus".

Don Hall with "Mercury Midge" speed job at Langley Park.

Dick Gibbs with semi scale "Auster" F.F. at 2nd Avenue, Mount Lawley, "Sabre".

INSET:  Irma Ashton with Rod's "Super Buccaneer".  Probably at RAAF Pearce.

Alex Cunningham with "Buckjumper: stunt job at Langley Par.

The following article about Don Still was received from Charlie Stone for our edification.  The article was from chicagotribune.com if you wish to read better copy.  Our printed copy had an overlay of ads and we have had to take it apart to get rid of them.

Graeme Cooke has sent a list of accommodation available for the SAM Champs at Canowindra early next year, for those who are interested.

Computer glitches have been plaguing us (as usual) and regrettably we can’t print everything we have received.

"These notes will be the last from me for TARMAC.  For various reasons I have decided that I cannot continue with the job but I hope someone who is closer to the pulse of things, will be able to keep it going.
My thanks go to those who helped with the fiddly bits.  I am very grateful that their cyber knowledge was offered when things ground to a halt.  In this regard, Jim was always there, as was Beverley whose contribution went above and beyond the call of duty.
Thanks again to everybody.
Dick"
