image13.jpg Ole Nielsen is an Australian sculptor, born in Denmark, who resides in picturesque Kangaroo Valley in the Southern Highlands of NSW. Until recently, he worked as a successful potter whose highest accolade was wining a gold medal at the annual Faenze exhibition in 1975. His long-standing love affair with wood has now come to the fore, as he sculpts his unique figures in rare Huon Pine and Australian Cedar. His trademark figures are called Meditations, and are seated figures that project a sense of calm and peace in the frenetic technology-driven world in which we live. He has also been casting Meditations in bronze, resulting in elegant figures which make an oasis of calm in the garden.

Nielsen also makes furniture in Australian wood. He prefers to make tables, and has made some outstanding pieces in Huon Pine, Cedar, Jarrah and River Oak, all indigenous Australian timbers. OLE NIELSEN - BIOGRAPHY


Ole Nielsen was born in Denmark in 1946 and studied at the Academy of Art, in Aarhus and the School of Art and Craft, in Copenhagen. He has worked with ceramics since 1969 from workshops in Ireland, France, Norway and Australia, with periodical engagements as a ceramic expert for Danida and the United Nations in South Africa, Swaziland, Cameroon, Nepal, Bangladesh and Trinidad. His work is held in many important public collections, including Faenza Museum, Italy, Australian Industrial Development Corporation (ACT), NSW Premiers Department, Commonwealth Banking Corporation (Sydney), Art Gallery of Western Australia, as well as private collections in Europe, Australia and the USA. From 1976 to 1984 and from 1995 to the present he has lived in Australia.
