AIDAN'S DIARY - MAY 2003

4 May 2003
One of the many readers sent a poem on 29 November 2002 re-casting Auden's Funeral Blues ...

A Tribute to Aidan ... by Alison

The stars are brighter now; Aidan's smile lights every one;
Casting a glow through the moon and shining through the sun;

His strength roars in the ocean and his footsteps grace the wood;

Whispering, "Your souls will sing again; my life was short, but it was good."

The dour spell of hospital trips was often broken with a visit to the "gift shop", a place of wonder for small boys and girls,stuffed with flluffy toys, plastic and shiny things in all shapes and sizesand a counter overflowing with sweets and chocolates.
On one such visit to the shop with Aidan in October (or possibly September) I found myself short of funds to purchase some item that had caught his eye; pens, pencils and pencil cases were a regular favourite. I begged leave and ducked around the corner to extract cash from an ATM. When I returned, only a few minutes later, an operating theatre nurse, who was between shifts, had befriended Aidan and bought him a small bag of lollies.
To the casual observer, he would have appeared all but abondoned, waiting quietly at the counter in his pyjamas, holding onto his IV pump stand. I thanked the nurse, purchased his latest "prize" and returned with my young man to the ward.
He really did cast a spell of innocence and beauty upon anybody who came too close.

Aidan was a regular attendee at the hospital "school"during 2001 and 2002. Jane, his teacher, framed one of his pictures andpresented it to us circa. mid-2002; the exact date (or even month) has sinceescaped me. Aidan drew so many pictures, but this is one of my favourites.
