3rd May, 2007:
Our next performance will be in
Fremantle at Kulcha on Friday 25th of May. Joining us on guitar and
with a few songs will be Gavin Fernie. We will also be having Tom DeRidder on
fiddle as our special guest. Tom was recently awarded the most talented young
instrumentalist award for 2007 at the National Folk Festival in Canberra.
We have also been invited to
the second Turning Wave Festival in Gundagai in September 2007. This is a new
festival of Irish music and the first one got a big thumbs up from the trad
musicians on the east coast so we are very much looking forward to it.
We were delighted to be part of
the Irish Summit concert at Fairbridge Festival. This was an exercise which
took some months to organise and involved some of Australia’s best Irish
musicians from three states. Sounds simple but we also wanted it to sound GOOD,
so there was a lot of discussion and pre-planning beforehand. The result spoke
for itself and we have since from lots of people that it was one of the
festival highlights. It was certainly very exciting on-stage with 11 very fine
musicians (3 fiddles, 2 flutes/whistles, 1 concertina, 2 bouzoukiz/citterns, 2
guitars, and drums on top!) and the crowd were doing some serious damage to the
floor as well. Well done all and look forward to repeating it at another
festival sometime (look out Gundagai).
13th January, 2007:
A lovely performance
opportunity will be coming up on the 28th of January 2007 as part of the
Subiaco Performing Arts Centre Summer Concert Series. This will be taking part
at Cliff Sadlier Park from 6-7.30pm and we will be joined by singer/guitarist
Gavin Fernie and the Kavanagh Irish Dancers. We love playing live music for
dancers - since that is a great deal of what Irish music is about - and it is
wonderful to have dancers who love dancing to live music!
We have also been booked to
perform at the 2007 National Folk Festival in Canberra at Easter. This year
they are featuring the cream of WA talent so we are delighted with the
invitation. Also a great opportunity to catch up with musical acquaintances on
the far side of the continent!
UK magazine "Folk
Roots" has given "The Good Ear" the coveted thumbs up in their
recent review of the album which hails it as having "stellar moments"
and recommends it to their readers. Lavish praise indeed!
We are
delighted to have been asked to be the special guests for the first performance
in WA by Irish fiddle player Gerry O'Connor and Breton guitarist Giles Le
Bigot. Gerry was acclaimed Male Musician of the Year in the 2006 Live Ireland
Awards. Coming from a country where music comes as easily as breathing, this is
no small praise. This will be one sweet night of music! It's on at the Fly By
Night Club on Friday March 24th. Be there!

Woo Hoo! We were nominated in
the Fremantle Herald as one of the top cultural events for 2005!
We've just been signed up with
internet distributor CD Baby - and the sale are already rocking in. For a quick
and easy purchase (and a good price too - don't ask how we did it) look under
for the link in our merchandise section.
And here's a nice review of
"The Good Ear" from Dirty Linen Magazine in the USA:
"Wooden flute and concertina represent relatively uncommon duo mates in
Celtic music, which fortunately didn't stop Australia's Dougal Adams and
Ormonde Waters from trying it. Their instrumental CD The Good Ear nicely
contrasts the earthy sound of the flute with the reedy hum of the
button-studded little squeezebox in 14 sets of mostly Irish tunes, simply
arranged with a pub-session feel. The pairings are both slow and deliberate, as
in the atmospheric "Lament for the Reverend Archie Beaton", and brisk
and sprightly, as in the "Bird in the Bush" reel set."
A track from "The Good
Ear" has been selected for the 2006 Kiss My WAMi compilation CD/DVD as one
of WA's finest musical recordings for the year.
Thanks to all those who enjoyed
our concert at Kulcha. Despite the short notice there was a great crowd and it
was a good opportunity to play some of our recent numbers. It was also great to
have such a good sound for the various pipes and to focus on them a bit more.
Expect another such delightful evening in the not too distant future!
4th November, 2005:
Our next
performance will be at Kulcha in
Fremantle on Saturday 12th November, with special guest Simon Nield joining us
on guitar.
19th July:
A new review of "The Good
Ear" in the latest "Irish Scene" describes us as "second to
none"! Have a read in the Critics section.
16th June, 2005:
Thanks to all those who braved the
coldest and wettest night of the year so far to join us for a marvellous night
of music. Simon Nield said it was the most attentive and even reverential crowd
he had ever played to. We were even wondering if the bar had been shut while we
were playing as there wasn't the usual hubbub of customers and ringing of tills
going on - but it was just that the audience had come for the music! It was
truly heartening to see that there was such strong and enthusiastic support for
something that we both love so much. We couldn't have asked for a better CD
launch - thanks to all who were involved with it, and to all those who came. We
hope to put another night on later in the year (when it's a bit warmer).
7th June, 2005:
Tune in to "The
Planet" on ABC radio tonight (7th June) to hear a track from the new CD!
The next big event will be a
launch by Ormonde Waters and Dougal Adams of their new CD "The Good
Ear". This features 14 tracks of Irish and Scottish traditional music as
well as some original tunes composed by Ormonde and Dougal. The fine flute and
concertina playing is wonderfully complemented by backing on guitar, bouzouki
and bodhran from Ben Stephenson from Sydney (of "Trouble in the
Kitchen" fame") and Jackie Wynne from London. The good news is that
Ben will by flying from Sydney to join Dougal and Ormonde for the launch. The
launch will take place at the Fly By Night Club in Fremantle on Saturday 11th
of June. Additional special guests include Suzanne Harris, Lisa Adams and
Russell Johnsen on fiddles, the Kavanagh School of Irish Dancing and
singer/songwriter/guitarist Simon Nield will be doing the support.
Pre-sale tickets are $15/$12
(concession) and are available directly from Dougal (tel: 9381 9687) or from
BOCS outlets (additional booking fees apply). Door sales will be $18/$15.
If you are unable to make it to
the launch but would like to obtain an advance copy of the CD - email us at thegoodear@hotmail.com. "The Good
Ear" is now also available at Mills Records and Rio Records in the
Fremantle Markets, 78 Records in Perth and at the Irish Club in Subiaco. They
