The shard is based on seven main character types of; Mage, Ranger, Warrior, Power Player, Thief, Bard and Crafter.  All new players start off at a level one class. Including Power Players

A little hint is to complete the newbie quest in wind area, to gain a small house or some good items including gold, to help your online campaign.
Picking your race is not a big issue due to no race bonuses But there are infact race quests. Do feel free to make a few different characters to pass each quest and achieve some great new quest prizes.
