Roselea Under 9/6 Team Report

2004 Champions!

Soccer Final 048.JPG (2617584 bytes)

This has really been a dream season of soccer. Last year's crew were infused with some new talent and steadily increased their skills under the excellent tutelage of Coach Brad Ray. The parents were very supportive and I am pleased to say well behaved (unlike some of the teams we played). We almost made it through the season undefeated and the team's defensive record is unsurpassed in the club. And the season culminated in a fantastic display of top-notch football to see the team take out the Under 9/6 Championship.

I know the boys' parents and other supporters enjoy the way the team's skills continue to improve and we are starting to see some great passing and teamwork happening. Brad's positive encouraging coaching style has been underpinned by excellent support from the parents that attended training every week.

The boys are good friends and the parents meet socially. It's a powerful recipe for success and I can tell you that the Championship Final and the celebratory BBQ that followed was the best Saturday I have enjoyed in a long time.

Thank you to the Roselea Soccer Club and it's emphasis on friendliness over competitiveness - although isn't it great when you win as well!

Have a great summer boys and I'll see you again next year.

player profiles

Brian Anderson

A terrific defender, Brian has really developed his attacking skills with many a deadly raid on the opposition. He is also a good keeper and pulled off some spectacular saves. This versatility makes Brian the Best Utility Player.

Connor Bain

With a fighting heart, Connor loves to play and was a joy to watch racing down the left wing, opponents bobbing in his wake. He was always in the thick of the action and won the majority of his tackles to earn Best All Round Talent.

Scott Bascil

Though small in stature, Scott has the heart of a lion and fearlessly took on all opponents no matter their size. He never gives up and invariably wins any midfield skirmishes he gets involved in. Scott is our Most Courageous Player.

Peter Head

Peter is equally at ease in midfield or attack and his powerful boot combined with his accurate passing provided many goal scoring opportunities for the team. He was a strong tackler and displayed great persistence as Most Powerful Attacker.

Joshua Jenkins

Josh has found his niche on the right wing and revels in the room to display his considerable dribbling skills. He terrorised the opposition with his fleet-footed attacks and scored the goal of the year with a 25m sizzler to earn Best Attacker.

Allan Jia

Another new player, Allan has been a revelation to the team. His amazing strength in tackling belies his size, he demonstrates fantastic footwork and ball control, and his work-rate is tremendous - Allan is truly the Most Dynamic Midfielder.

Jaime Koukoutas

Our primary keeper, Jaime kept a consistently clean sheet with only one goal conceded from 23 halves in the net. With an ability to see opportunity up field, he would belt the ball forward to turn defence into attack, truly our Best Goalkeeper.

Taner Ozer

Taner is a great defender who can always be relied upon to get the job done. He reads the game well and is always in position to repel any dangerous opposition incursions. Quiet but dependable, Taner is our Best Defensive Block.

Dean Pattalis

Dean's almost magical control of the ball allowed him to slip through the defence at will to the despair of our opponents. With 26 goals to his credit, Dean mastered many of our wins this year and he truly earns the title of Most Prolific Goal Scorer.

Jonathon Ray

Another player who gives 110%, Jonathon is always in the thick of the action. He never gives up and puts his body on the line to support his team mates. Jonathon epitomises the expression "there is no 'I' in team" and is the Best Team Player.

Guy Ruggles

A prolific goal scorer, Guy is the fastest runner in the team and tackles like a Sherman Tank. His powerful boot helped him score five goals for the season and combined with his speed to achieve the title of Fastest Attacking Player.

Luke Scaramuzza

Luke came to the team's rescue at a time when we were in dire need of quality defenders. With some fancy footwork and judicious clearance kicks, Luke saved our bacon many times and is regarded as the team's Best New Talent.

Daniel Tonnet

Known as the "enforcer", Daniel continued his punishing defensive role but also made his mark in attack and was unlucky not to score. With a fierce determination and a willingness to take on any sized opponent, Daniel is our Best Tackler.

Daniel Waugh

A new player to the team, Daniel is an enthusiastic defender with a kick like a mule. He has proved to be the defender of last resort and also served five scoreless halves in goal. With his thoughtful clearances, he earns the title of Best Defender.

round by round

Round 1

A great start to the season with the boys playing in position and showing improved ball control and passing skills over last year. Roselea dominated the game in attack and defence - our goalie never saw the ball. Newcomers Allan and Scott impressed with good tackling ably supported by Daniel, Jonathon and Guy. Two great goals were scored by Dean in the first half and Connor followed up with a third in the second half. Congratulations to all for a well-earned win. Player of the Match: Dean Pattalis; Encouragement Award: Allan Jia.

Round 2

This was a great win against a strong team. We were 1-0 down at half-time despite excellent defence by Scott, Allan, Daniel and Brian. In the second half Peter received the ball with one defender in front and after winning the tackle booted the ball through for the equaliser. The game turned and our repeated attacks by Connor, Joshua, Dean and Luke were rewarded when Dean lobbed one over their heads from a corner pass. I think Dural may have been better players on paper but they couldn't match our boys' determination and heart. Player of the Match: Peter Head; Encouragement Award: Joshua Jenkins.

Round 3

We had an even first half with good attacking runs by Joshua, Guy and Scott and excellent defensive work by Allan, Taner and Daniel Waugh. Overall, our boys were playing better in their positions and turned it on in the second half with three goals from good running and footwork by Dean. The score could have been higher with great shots from Connor, Guy and Scott. The team is big hearted and a joy to watch - good game of soccer from all of you, thanks boys! Player of the Match: Scott Bascil; Encouragement Award: Connor Bain.

Round 4

This was a hard fought game which could have gone either way. In the first half we initially had the better of play with Josh, Connor, Alan and Dean making excellent runs and peppering the Gladesville goal. Unfortunately, against the run of play, Gladesville scored a runaway goal and appeared to gain the ascendency. The boys showed tremendous spirit and went out with renewed vigour in the second half. They created many opportunities before an excellent combination from Taner and Guy resulted in the equaliser. Daniel Tonnet was tigerish in defence, Jaime was having an excellent all round game and Luke was displaying some dazzling footwork. Daniel Waugh was also exceptional in defence. An excellent overall effort by the whole team. Player of the Match: Daniel Tonnet; Encouragement Award: Jaime Koukoutas.

Round 5

A pretty close game reflected in the score of nil all. We were unlucky on a few occasions with a cross passing the All Saints open goal mouth begging for a Roselea kick, Guy Ruggles shooting and beating the goalie but just missing the goal mouth, and Josh Jenkins almost scoring close to the end of the game. Dean Pattalis earned a penalty shot and kicked a great high lob over the goalie who amazingly stopped it! Good work from all but particular mention goes to Josh Jenkins and Jaime Koukoutas for great attacking, Guy Ruggles for persistent effort, Daniel Waugh and Scott Bascil for their tackling prowess. Player of the Match: Guy Ruggles; Encouragement Award: Daniel Waugh.

Round 6

The boys have been keenly tracking the division table and so I think they were surprised at the tussle they encountered against the Redbacks - several places below us and one player short for the match. The first half saw a fairly even to-and-fro with the Redbacks slightly ahead on tackles. The two Daniels - Waugh and Tonnet - did a great job in stopping the other team before they reached our goal area. Scott Bascil and Peter Head were terrific in attack and Alan Jia was a terrier in the middle. The second half saw Dean Pattalis fired up as he led some punishing runs into Redback territory with a great goal disallowed by an off-side penalty. The team quickly retaliated however with two goals by Deano. Our defence was even better in the second, keeping the ball mostly in their half. A good win! Player of the Match: Brian Anderson; Encouragement Award: Jonathon Ray.

Round 7

This game began with North Ryde dishing out some very rough play to a number of our boys. But we continued to play our trademark defensive game and stuck to playing the ball. Brian Anderson was all over the other team and Joshua Jenkins, Scott Bascil and Connor Bain were pushing hard. It paid off too with a great goal by Guy Ruggles at the ten minute mark. In reply, North Ryde knocked down a few more of us until the prime suspect was awarded a "yellow card". Things calmed down. In the second half, Roselea dominated. A fantastic run by Daniel Tonnet was finished off by Dean Pattalis for our second goal. Then Dean's persistent shooting was backed up by a goal from Peter Head. The crowd was going crazy as Taner Ozer, Luke Scaramuzza and Daniel Waugh tackled everything that came at them. Dean scored two more goals with good support from Jonathon Ray and Jaime Koukoutas. Finally, a play by Guy Ruggles was completed with a kick from pint-sized Allan Jia that fair sizzled into the net to seal North Ryde's doom. Sweet work, boys. Player of the Match: Allan Jia; Encouragement Award: Taner Ozer.

Round 8

With a fantastic display of team work, Roselea demolished West Pennant Hills. A fast running game saw Connor Bain, Dean Pattalis and Guy Ruggles relentlessly attacking the goal while Luke Scaramuzza, Brian Anderson and Daniel Tonnet defended from all-comers. Dean broke through their defence early and demonstrated the value of ball control and shot placement as he scored three goals in the first half and two more in the second. Guy was also on fire and snapped two goals in the first half. Our defence was magnificent with Brian (in goals) stopping an almost certain goal late in the second half. What a great way to start round two and a big improvement to our goal difference. Player of the Match: Connor Bain; Encouragement Award: Luke Scaramuzza.

Round 9

This tough match against our arch-rivals started with Dural desperate to make amends for their first round defeat. Our boys were very conscious of the situation and adopted a very defensive game from the outset. The game was mainly in the midfield with Joshua Jenkins, Allan Jia and Scott Bascil making sure Dural were kept under control. But then a couple of breakaway runs by Dural took the game to our goal and a strong kick just eluded Jaime Koukoutas - the first one to get past him in ten halves (counting last year as well). In the second half, Roselea grew more determined and Guy Ruggles and Dean Pattalis were more active in attack. Midway through the half, Dean broke away and after weaving through the backline delivered a sizzling kick wide of the keeper and straight into the back of the net! Several more times we came close to scoring but the game ended in 1-1 draw. A good game that proved our boys can come back from the brink - a strong-hearted fighting team of champions. Player of the Match: Joshua Jenkins; Encouragement Award: Guy Ruggles.

Round 10

West Ryde adopted a very defensive game, surrounding the goal and the ball with a pack of players. Our boys went along with this for much of the match which made for a scrappy looking game for the most part. Guy Ruggles and Jonathon Ray stood out in attack while Scott Bascil and Brian Anderson were playing well in defence. Jaime Koukoutas came out of goal in the second half for a run as our back line had kept everything away from him. The attack began to fire and then Dean connected with a fantastic cross by Brian to put away the winning goal ten minutes from the final whistle. Player of the Match: Jonathon Ray; Encouragement Award: Brian Anderson.

Round 11

We were number 1 in the comp going up against number 2: Gladesville. Equal on points but Roselea was ahead by goal difference. Neither side has lost a game this season and this match proved to be a close fought tussle. From the sideline it looked a very even match but Roselea had the edge in goal attacks with several shots by Dean Pattalis just going wide and one just caught on the goal line. Taner Ozer had a blinder of a game in the midfield and Jonathon Ray impressed the spectators with his commitment and energy. But the heart stopping moment came when a late tackle on a Gladesville player set them up for a penalty shot with only Jaime Koukoutas to beat. But Jaime faced him down and the shot went wide - phew! The best moment of the game was a scintillating movement started from the centre by Jonathon who passed it forward to Joshua Jenkins who then turned and passed the ball inside and up field to Peter Head. This put us in right on the edge of the shooting zone and although no goal eventuated, it was a great Saturday soccer moment. A draw was a fair result and we look forward to seeing the boys tackle them again in the next round. Player of the Match: Taner Ozer; Encouragement Award: Dean Pattalis.

Round 12

This game was worth getting up early for on a cold winters morning. From an initial hesitant start by Roselea, the game began to pick up pace as Scott Bascil, Allan Jia and Luke Scaramuzza took control in the forwards. Scott was a tackling demon and must have beaten 8 players in a row on one occasion. Our backline was also firing with Taner Ozer stopping every All Saints player that came near him, ably flanked by Brian Anderson and Daniel Waugh. The tension was mounting when Joshua Jenkins lofted a ball over his opponent's head and past the keeper for the goal of the season. In the second half, the boys poured it on and developed some great soccer. A Dean Pattalis shot at goal was stopped by the goalie but in the resulting scramble Allan Jia put it away for our second. Shortly after, Dean finished off a great run through the pack with a solid shot for our third. All Saints rallied and despite some great defending by Taner and Luke, broke through and might have scored two goals but for the safe hands of Daniel Waugh in goal. Finally, Brian Anderson tore down the wing and in a surprise move, propped and passed the ball back to Dean who passed it across goal where Connor Bain sealed the result by blasting in our fourth goal. Well played boys and a great game to watch. Player of the Match: Luke Scaramuzza; Encouragement Award: Scott Bascil.

Round 13

We really enjoyed watching this game because, like the weather, the soccer is beautiful right now. Daniel Waugh, Taner Ozer and Luke Scaramuzza were impenetrable in the back-line. Along with the safe hands of Jaime Koukoutas (1st) and Daniel (2nd), they have kept goals scored against us at an amazingly low three for the season. At the other end of proceedings Joshua Jenkins, Allan Jia and Daniel Tonnet kept the pressure turned up on the Redbacks. The team has really started playing as one with some terrific passing showing how quickly the ball can be taken from our half to the opposition goal. After several waves of attack, Brian Anderson kicked a screamer which deflected off a Redback and into the net for our first. Soon after Dean Pattalis was goal bound and showed some quick thinking with a deft toe flick to defeat the keeper just before he could grab the ball. In the second half, Jaime came out for a run and seemed to be everywhere, tackling and turning the ball back into attack time and again. Connor Bain and Jonathon Ray performed an excellent job in the mid-field while Guy Ruggles ably supported Allan and Josh in attack. A continual onslaught by Roselea yielded three more goals by Dean - "the Boot" - to complete our 5-0 win. Player of the Match: Jaime Koukoutas; Encouragement Award: Daniel Tonnet.

Round 14

Last game of the Premiership round and our first wet one. Due to a late start, the game was shortened but due to a mistake by the referee, we only ended up playing 30 minutes of football. Nevertheless, after their characteristic slow start, the boys started firing and managed a small goal-fest. Guy Ruggles punched the first one in from a long way out with a powerful kick. Some great passing and attacking play rewarded Allan Jia with our second. Dean Pattalis was next to elude the opposition players and put the ball into the net for our third. Joshua Jenkins and Jonathon Ray were doing a great job in supporting attack while Luke Scaramuzza and Taner Ozer kept the ball away from our goals. Our fourth goal came from a Connor Bain cross which was finished off by Peter Head. In the second half Daniel Waugh went from keeper to backline and did a great job tackling and thoughtfully kicking the ball back into attack. The team continued to improve their game with skilful passing to completely outclass the opposition. A final goal by Dean sealed the result for another good performance by Roselea. Player of the Match: Daniel Waugh; Encouragement Award: Peter Head.

Championship Round Robin 1

A great start to the Championship Round Robin with another Roselea victory under the belt! A very good team effort with possession kept in Gladesville's half for 80% of the game. Allan Jia took to the field with 3 stitches in his hand but still put on a powerhouse performance of tackling and swerving. His determination paid off as midway through the first half, a shot from Dean Pattalis dribbled through the keeper's hands and Allan pounced, stabbing it into the back of the net. Jonathon Ray also impressed the crowd, pushing the ball up field past 5 or 6 players at a time. Luke Scaramuzza was stalwart in defence and contributed to keeping the visitors scoreless. In the second half, Gladesville pushed back harder but Daniel Waugh's steadfast defence returned the ball to their half again and again. On the few times that Gladesville penetrated our back line, Jaime Koukoutas did a sterling effort as keeper to keep their shots out. In one heart-stopping moment, a runaway Gladesville player looked certain to score but he was relentlessly run down by Brian Anderson. Guy Ruggles, Connor Bain and Joshua Jenkins were passing well and Dean had some near misses so we were unlucky not to score one or two more. Player of the Match: Allan Jia; Encouragement Award: Jonathon Ray.

Championship Round Robin 2

Well, our undefeated run came to an end today with the boys tasting their first loss this season. They didn't like it much either. The first half saw Roselea dominating the game with nearly all the play spent in West Ryde's half. Again and again the likes of Dean Pattalis, Joshua Jenkins and Allan Jia got inside the box but couldn't finish it off. A very determined Peter Head almost turned the tide as he continually battered the defence and refused to give up. Just as we thought he was done he somehow scraped the ball past another defender and finally through the keeper into the net. Unfortunately the referee ruled against it. Moments later, a cross presented Daniel Tonnet with a golden opportunity and he lobbed the ball over the keeper's head but also just over the crossbar - giving the crowd minor heart failure. In the second half, West Ryde found some extra energy and although Jonathon Ray and Connor Bain were playing well feeding our forwards and keeping West Ryde in their own half, more and more runaway West Ryde players took the ball to our keeper. Brian Anderson had his work cut out for him in goal but he saved our bacon several times. Ten minutes later, West Ryde battered our goal until a kick across the goal-face was shot gunned into the back of our net. Our boys were stunned and a reinvigorated West Ryde managed a repeat performance another 5 minutes later. That was it for Roselea. But although our Championship Final push has faltered, it is definitely not over. Keep your head up, lads. Depending on the other matches and your result next week we can still be there. Just go out there, play your best and have fun. Your parents are all behind you! Player of the Match: Peter Head; Encouragement Award: Connor Bain.

Championship Round Robin 3

A really important game for us so it was good to see the boys were fired up and enthusiastic after their loss last week. Dural hasn't beaten us all season and I'm pleased to report that is still the case. Both teams were evenly matched providing us with an exciting game to watch. Key performances this week came from Guy Ruggles (Player of the Match) who aggressively attacked the Dural goal and Joshua Jenkins (Encouragement Award) who tackled, chased and kicked the ball tirelessly. Keeper Jaime Koukoutas kept our hopes alive with a great save in the first half. Connor Bain, Allan Jia, Daniel Waugh, Dean Pattalis and Brian Anderson also stood out but really, everyone played a great game. A nil all draw.

Championship Final

Everyone played the game of their life to work as one and trounce Dural. Dean Pattalis scored the winning goal in a sweet victory that capped a great year for our boys and an excellent effort from coach Brad.
