Westie Profile

With a height of about 28cms and the weight of about 7-9kgs, the West Highland white terrier undoubtedly ranks as one of the small breeds of dogs. That, however, is by no means an indication that Westies exhibit the character traits commonly attributed to small dogs. Westies are not delicate or prone to disease; on the contrary, they are robust little animals that like stimulation and exercise , and their training demands the same energy and firmness required with large dogs.

The Westie is no way a lap dog!

Westies greet visitors with serene geniality, do not bark without cause but report unusual noises, are equally cordial and affectionate with every member of the family and are always ready to place themselves in front of "their" family if danger arises.

Their equable nature and love of fun make Westies ideal family pets. They love to romp and be in motion, and they make ideal playmates for children.

Westies are extremely easy to teach; they catch on quickly and enjoy having tasks to carry out. Nevertheless, like all terriers, they are stubborn, and will do whatever they like.

Westies are not aggressive dogs; their behaviour toward others of their kind is friendly and self-assured. They are not inclined to to let themselves be intimidated, but react fearlessly and boldly, even where large dogs are concerned.

Despite their size, Westies don't like to be carried or to be lugged around in pockets. They want to have all four feet on the ground - and in motion. Their need for exercise is exceptionally great; many Westies easily accompany their master or mistress on a 15km jog. Because these dogs are alert and quick to learn, they also require attention from owners. If they lack challenge or have no opportunity to let off steam in an appropriate way, they will suffer both intellectual and emotionally.
