About Judo Ryu WA

Welcome to the website of Judo Ryu Western Australia.

2006 Fremantle Open Judo Championships

Judo Ryu WA was founded in early 2005 to provide Judo training to children aged 5½ to 10. Within weeks we had to extend to two junior classes and in May, due to popular demand, adult classes have been added to the programme. Now children aged 6 and over can also train on Thursdays.

Judo is best known for it's spectacular throwing techniques but also involves considerable grappling on the ground utilizing specialized pins, control holds and for senior players, arm locks and Judo choking techniques. Contrary to many other martial arts, Judo does not include aggressive punching and kicking but focuses on defensive techniques using your opponents strengths and weaknesses to your advantage. Judo means "The Gentle Way".

Judo emphasizes safety and full physical activity for top conditioning. Judo is learned on special mats for comfort and safety.

   Our players

As in all sports, Judo has a strict set of rules that governs competition and ensures safety. For those who want to test their skills, Judo offers the opportunity for competition at all skill levels, from club to national tournaments, to the Olympic Games. There are separate weight divisions for boys and girls, men and women.

But most of all.... Judo is FUN.

We train at the Fremantle PCYC (Police & Community Youth Centre), 32A Paget Street in Hilton, Western Australia (Need Directions?). See our training timetable for more information.

Our coach, Robert Tichelaar, teaches Judo in an active, fun and safe manner. Judokas (players) learn various Judo techniques as well as discipline, respect and care for each other.

Come and join us for a free complimentary lesson.
