The project was to instal a Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger from the Kaori Heat Exchanger company into an HJ61 Landcruiser running a 12HT motor.
Vege oil blend, or alternatively called WVO or SVO, systems benefit from the oil or blend being heated prior to the injection pump to ensure a more complete burn and lesson any chance of coking injectors or rings. In conjunction with the WA Renewable Fuels Association, a KO-30 model heat exchanger was purchased with a 5.7kw rating. Fittings were purchased from Enzed including 1.5m of high quality heater hose to ensure no kinking on the tight bends.
Cold fuel goes to B1 and flows through to B2. Hot coolant goes to A2 and returns to the motor out of A1. That is: it is a contraflow system, as per the manufacturers instructions. They also state the HE needs to be mounted upright to avoid air traps. A temperature gauge was fitted to the oil outlet, and on general running it reads approximately 65°C to 70°C.
After the oil is heated, it flows through the CAV/Delphi filter, fitted with a Ryco296 or R2132P filter which is tested to run to 80°C and 15 microns, then into the vehicle lift pump and injection pump.
The project took approximately a day, with equal time spent making the bracket from heavy aluminium sheet and the installation of the hoses.
