Fitting the Walschaerts Type Valve-Gear Pt3

I'll start with a couple of pictures again showing the parts from 2 different angles

The first step is to take a weigh shaft spacer and slide it over the left hand end of weigh shaft, then the left hand lifting arm. My picture shows the left hand one which has any extra arm pointing up to connect to the reversing rod.

Using two M2 steel screws connect the lifting link to the lifting arm and the radius rod.
The first screw passes through the radius rod and screws into the thread on the lifting link and the second does the same on the lifting arm. Do not do these screws up tight, leave a small gap to allow movement and then lock the screws in place by threading a M2 nut at the back of the lifting link and do up tight.

Screw the reversing rod into the quicklink and attach to the lifting arm.

Now the valve gear needs to be set to mid gear. We do this by moving the lifting arm via the reversing rod until the hex screw on the radius rod is in the centre of the expansion link.
In my left photo the radius rod is sitting in the bottom of the expansion link.
You can check it is in mid gear by rotating the wheels and watch the radius rod, there should be no forward or aft movement. Now clamp the reversing rod to the side of the chassis, I used a toolmaker's clamp.

Now turn the weigh shaft until the bow in it is at the bottom and tighten up the grub screw on the lifting arm.

Now with the reversing rod still clamped assemble the right hand side ensuring when you do up the grub screw on the right hand lifting arm that both radius rods are exactly in mid gear or they will be lifted unevenly when the lifting arms are operated.

That's the valve gear assembled now its onto the timing.
